Sandy Hole is written on the 1901 census form in the column for street or name of house. It is in the same column as the names of certain farms and cottages. Next door is somewhere called Brickhouse, then Dingle, then Myndrithon, then Folly Farm and Crossway (all in New Radnor area). If you can find any of these still around (possibly the farms) you should be able to find the area.

I saw this article and although it is not about the people you are looking for, it does mention Sandy Hole :
The Brecon Radnor Express Carmarthen and Swansea Valley Gazette and Brynmawr District Advertiser - 19th September 1918

Amongst the killed in the latest advance was Pte. James Gittoes (third son of Mr and Mrs T. Gittoes, the blacksmith's shop. and Sandy Hole. Xew Radnor

This is the family on 1911 showing the area as being in New Radnor:

Mary thank you just saw your second post..This is great!! Will explore tomorrow.

Judith

Judith Report 10 Jul 2017 11:26

I did find the census for 1861 where there was a Benjamin Williams but he was born in Abbeycwmhir, Radnorshire, Wales. I did not know if this was near the Sandy Hole listed on the 1881 census.

Maddie - you are correct he did move to Nottinghamshire.

Dea - it was James Williams who married Hannah Tedds

Mary - thank you for your suggestion re the Herefordshire border. Will look into that.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Must head to bed as it's 3.24 in the morning here.
You know how one can get caught up in the search! Will check in again In the morning. :-) :-)

I can see no births registered for the boys under those names and no marriage for a Benjamin Williams to a Hannah Tedds?

Do you have any more details please?

Dea x

OOOpps - It seems to have been James who married Hannah Tedds, not Benjamin.

Judith

Judith Report 10 Jul 2017 10:59

I see in the 1901 and 1911 James Williams he is listed as being born in Brampton, Radnorshire. Does that make sense? Could there be a Sandy Hole near a place called Brampton?

I live in Canada so not so easy for me to research the actual place,

Judith

Judith Report 10 Jul 2017 10:53

Radnorshire, Sandy Hole is listed on the 1881 census as birth place for both James and his brother Benjamin.

Their father Benjamin Williams is listed as Bailiff on the marriage certificate for James and his wife Hannah Tedds.

I can't find James Wiliams in any census before 1881.
