My Grandfather was called Henry Simpson and was stationed at HMS Ceres in Wetherby during,1951, this was on the wedding certificate that I found. When he married my Grandma, Joyce Rosendale on August 4th 1951 he was 21 years old. Not sure where he was born but believed to be Scottish. This is literally all the information I have, does anyone have any thoughts on what I could try or where I can search as I am thoroughly stumped. Thanks in advance!

Was his father not named on the marriage cert?

Rambling

Rambling Report 11 May 2017 20:13

Do you know where and when his death was registered as it may give his birth date?

possible?
Births Mar 1929 (>99%)

Simpson Henry mmn McLean Leeds 9b 558

mother McLean could be Scottish, not seeing a marriage for parents on freebmd so 'might' indicate not in England?

Hi, sorry yes his father was on the marriage certificate, also called Henry Simpson. I don't know when/if he has died, the whole thing has been a bit of a secret. It's only since my grandma passed away way that we have found out a few things to be honest!

Thanks for you help, I appreciate any pointers as I am going round in circles. I looked into your suggestion with McClean as maiden name but the age doesn't match up, he was 21 years old when they married. There are a couple of deaths that could be him but I can't find enough info to research them individually. I am a total novice!

what is henrys father occupation on the marriage cert ?

Sarah

Sarah Report 11 May 2017 21:43

Hi, fathers occupation is a labourer, I will have a look at the death a little more closely. I don't know how long he was in the Navy for so he could have settled in Leeds. I could only find three deaths that could be him, if he is dead but I couldn't get any further, I guess I will have to persevere!! Thanks for your help, much appreciated :-)

SylviaInCanada Report 12 May 2017 01:01

In 1951, he could have been doing his 2 year National Service, which all young men had to do ...................

From 1 January 1949, healthy males 17 to 21 years old were expected to serve in the armed forces for 18 months, and remain on the reserve list for four years.

In October 1950, in response to the British involvement in the Korean War, the service period was extended to two years. To compensate, the reserve period was reduced by six months.

National Service ended gradually from 1960. In November 1960 the last men entered service, as call-ups formally ended on 31 December 1960, and the last National Servicemen left the Armed Forces in May 1963.

Men could defer starting their Service if they went on to post secondary education (university or Teacher Training College)

OR he could have enlisted for a longer period.

There was one child born to that marriage, in 1954, in Leeds

Is that correct?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 May 2017 01:14

HMS Ceres (shore establishment 1946) was the Supply and Secretariat training school at Wetherby, Yorkshire, between 1946 and 1958.

If you Google HMS Ceres, Wetherby there are several sites coming up ......... including a Facebook Page, and an article in the Wetherby News re the last reunion for members of HMS Ceres.

It's close to the end for having surviving members, but it might be worth your while to browse some of those sites.

Hi, yes there was one child born, that is my Mum and she was never told who her father was. She remembers seeing a man in a navy uniform when he came to visit once and was told it was 'uncle Harry' so quite possibly the same man but still in uniform approx 1957/1958. I will try and find some contact details for people from HMS Ceres and see where I get to. Thanks! :-)

Could the witnesses on the marriage cert. be relatives. What were their names?

Sarah

Sarah Report 12 May 2017 20:32

With regards to the witnesses at the wedding, one is impossible to read and the other is either R or B Simpson. i am so happy that so many people are offering suggestions, such a big help so thank you all so much!

How about this birth in Scotland - could possibly tie in with the death Safc posted?

SIMPSON HENRY M 1930 168/1 814 St Nicholas Order Cert

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 May 2017 10:59

Depending on when his birthday was, this may be another Scottish possibility:

SIMPSON, HENRY
M
1929
490/ 417
Stirling

Or if he had a middle name:

SIMPSON
HENRY ROBB
M
1929
282/2 123
St Clement

Unfortunately there's no way to find out the father's name without buying a copy of the cert.
