Mary, I don't know but I might make the guess that as the 1899 marriage is bigamous John gave his father as deceased ( basing that on my bigamous grandfather on other side doing similar) ?
on the marriage of Annie gives George as a labourer

Next door 1911 78,High Street John Wakeford 1868 Brighton Sussex a Farrier Annie 1875 Beenham Berkshire Kate Amelia Wakeford 1907 Compere John's signature on this!!
Kate Amelia nee Greetham 1907 died Brentford 1936
John Wakeford married O/N/D 1904 Croyden Surrey V2a P 732 to Annie Greetham
I can't find a John Wakeford born in Brighton 1868,if it isn't brother of Joseph it's a bit of a coincidence.
EDIT maybe not, trees on Ancestry say he was John William Wakeford. born 1867.Sussex.

that would possibly make that John a son of the Charles Wakeford whose daughter Mary married in Turnham Green, so from Sussex originally and so not mine.

Thank you Austin, that certainly looks very interesting :-) That was my next port of call, the criminal possibilities. It might explain a lot I think, also some of the changes of occupation on marriages and census.
Maybe he chose the surname Barnes as an alias because it is just across the river from Chiswick. :-D
