Hello I've finally got back to researching James Abbott. I have had information from another source that has him as taking part in the Boer War.

I am of the opinion that he could well have done many things. I am going to follow the line of enquiry that he went back to South Zeal.

I will let you know if I find definite information. thank you for your help so far.

ArgyllGran Report 2 May 2017 21:19

His army records were on Ancestry, Ann.

The lodger at St Mary Magdalene was in the 1901 census, not 1911, but yes, that looks like him, because born in North Hill, and single, as James was at that time.

We can't find him anywhere in 1911, neither in Canada nor UK.

The man on the Campania in 1903 could be him, if the clerk in New York was mistaken in saying he was Irish - maybe he was confused by a Cornish accent ??
The UK Outgoing record of the same man's journey doesn't say he was Irish.

But he would have had to rush back to the UK in time for his wedding.

EDIT:

No, he was definitely Irish, per the NY record, as it give a place of last residence - Dinmull or something like that - hard to read the handwriting. There's also the complication of the Thomas Abbott travelling with him, whose last address was the same place as James, and was possibly a brother.
They were farmers, too.

AnnWilliams Report 2 May 2017 21:03

Oh this is so confusing. You don't think my guy who went to NY in 1903 is my relative? Probably not as mine was definitely born in Coads Green, that much is about all I do know. I remember seeing as a small child a photograph of a serviceman in odd uniform with a funny hat. I wonder where that photo is now and if that was him.

If he married in 1903 was he the lodger at St Mary Magdalen in 1911 census time? Launceston to Okehampton only takes about an hour these days so I guess if he was helping to build that modern church there he may have lodged. The Abbotts all had good Masonery skills and some carpentery skills.

Many thanks for all your most interesting discoveries. I was getting off the bus this morning when I was squizzing through it and just stood in the Bus stop with my mouth open. Where did you get all the information? Anyway many thanks
Ann

No idea, Margaret! Can't find him anywhere.

MargaretM Report 2 May 2017 16:21

Could be, ArgyllGran, but where is he on the 1911 Canadian census which was taken June 1st.?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 May 2017 16:00

As he had been working for the Municipality of Burnaby, BC, maybe he had gone out to Canada to work before the war, which would account for his non-appearance in 1911 census.

I don't see any definite travel records, though.

This one might be a possibility, although it says he's a farm labourer. But he's English, and heading for Vancouver. Burnaby is on the outskirts of Vancouver

Curious as to why he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force but enlisted in England. And why was he returned to Canada after the war? Was he in Canada earlier? I can't find him there but he was missing from the 1911 census in England.

Also in Ann's opening post she said that he sailed to New York in 1903 aboard the Campania but that James Abbott was born in Ireland. I'm fairly certain that that's not him.
