Ti

Ti Report 22 Apr 2017 19:25

Ti

Ti Report 22 Apr 2017 19:31

other info i found was on his marriage cert to Isabella Cockburn in 1880 Kilmadock.. said dad was a David Wotton shoemaker! But no other info at all, guess he could have come from anywhere!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 Apr 2017 21:16

I would say William Whitelaw was David's uncle - Jane's brother - but could be wrong!

I don't think David would have been adopted - just fostered ("boarded out") until he was old enough to start work for that grocer in Glasgow - some time between 1871 and his marriage.

as it has father David Wotton , shoemaker on the marriage cert, do you know any way of finding this out. Have looked on 1861 and 1871 census with name variations but cant find anything there, any ideas?

Ti

Oh yes. Spelled Wootton on Ancestry.

And he's in 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses too.

He was obviously married when he somehow met Jane and fathered her baby, so was in no position to marry her.

I wonder if Martha ever knew about it? For that matter, I wonder if he knew about it himself?

Birth of their son Herbert C:

WOOTTON, HERBERT CHARLES mms CHARLES
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in WOLVERHAMPTON & SEISDON Volume 17 Page 365

so David & Martha's marriage:

Marriages Jun 1848 (>99%)
Charles Martha Wolverhampton 17 380
WOOTTON David Wolverhampton 17 380

Probably his death:

Deaths Dec 1894 (>99%)
Wootton David 74 Newport, Sh. 6a 475

EDIT:

Have deleted the birth I posted - definitely wrong date !!

Can't see a birth record for him (the one I suggested previously was definitely wrong).

On that 1861 census, Jane's occupation is given as Lady's Maid to one of the visitors. She must have been pretty good at the job to be Lady's Maid to the wife of Lord Kinnaird as he would appear to be quite high ranking.

George William Fox Kinnaird, 9th Lord Kinnaird, was born in April 1807 and succeeded to the title when he was nineteen. He devoted much attention to the management of his estates and was skilled in agriculture. He was a Freemason, and was Grand-Master of Scotland 1830-31. He was Master of the Buckhounds 1839-41; a Privy Councillor 1840; a Knight of the Order of the Thistle 1857; and Lord-Lieutenant of Perthshire 1866-78. On 20 June 1831 he was created Baron Rossie of Rossie (Perth). He married Frances Anna Georiana Ponsonby (daughter of William Francis Spencer Ponsonby, first Baron de Mauley) in Canford. On 1 September 1860, his own male issue having failed, he was created Baron Kinnaird of Rossie, with a specific remainder, failing heirs-male of his own body, to his brother Arthur and the heirs-male of his body. He died at Rossie in 1878, when the Barony of Rossie of 1831 became extinct.

Hi another query here...researching the other side of the family! I have Robert Martin Wotton born to David William Wotton and Margaret Martin, married 1901. According to the marriage cert Margaret was the daughter of Robert Martin and Margaret Martin nee Green, ages given as 29 and 20 respectively. I'm confused about the lineage of Margaret... I can find a record in the 1861 census which suggests Margaret Green born 1855 in Galston ayrshire, but nothing else. On the marriage cert of Robert Martin and Margaret Green (married Auchinlech Ayr 1873) it says her parent were John Green and Isabella Green born Stitt. There is a census result in 1861 for a Margaret Green, child of Isabella Green... but says fathers name is William? Is it possible people used different names do you think?

Ti

Ti Report 23 Apr 2017 16:30

oop just found Margaret Green in old parish register born 1854, the registration system changed in 1855 so thats why no record!
