Hi wonder if anyone can advise? I'm a paid member of scotlandspeople trying to research my family tree. I'm researching the Wotton family line but when I get back to my grandfather's great grandparents (about 1860) I find no birth record. I can see information on his name, occupation and wife's details from both the birth and marriage record of his son, but there is no record of him being born at all. He is recorded also in the 1881 and 1891 census as head of household, with an approximate birth date of 1860 in Straiton, Ayrshire... but no record of this on the site at all. The birth was obviously registered somewhere but the record is missing... does anyone know of another ite I can use to search? Ive tried archives and ancestry as well as this one but only census results available for Scotland. |

Just to add to this if anyone can help... the name I'm looking for is David Whitelaw Wotton, married to Isabella Cockburn in 1880. |

Have you looked at his own marriage cert to see his parents' details? |

Yes it is, absolutley correct, thanks very much for your help! I ve just been looking at this census result as you posted and saw that it differs slightly... still no birth record for him available however, even when i search under name card variations and am really stuck on how to go back any further, argggh... Thre is howver a record of his marriage to Isabella and this actually shows details of his parents as a David Wotton and Jane Whitelaw... but no records of them either? |

He's Wootton at death - but that doesn't help either. |

Looks as if Jane didn't keep him, and he was "a boarded-out" - early form of fostering. |

Thanks! What do you thin happened then> Do you think he was adopted by the family? WHo knows eh? I found the birth record for him on scotlands people regisyred as illegitimate with a Jane Whitelaw as mother, wondering where the Jane in the household went! |
