Re possibility that Frederica Thomas was possible mother of the two children ........ I note that she was 34 in 1901. That means she would only have been about 15/16 in 1882 when Thomas was born.
However, the name Frederick may indicate that she was the mother of the younger child.

did you see the 1911 census for Frederica Thomas??

Thanks Sylvia. Great work
Sharon Ablett and i are in contact, and between us we have a lot of information ... It's just the marriage (as per census) of Joseph Pedley Ablett we are missing. :-)

I'm guessing that he either married overseas for some reason, or he did not marry the mother(s) of his children for some reason unknown ......
..... possibly he simply wanted an heir and a spare OR he just did not want to marry but his lover(s) became pregnant, and he took on the children (because of the heir theory).
Have you thought of getting his will to see how he distributed his estate? The Administrator Sidney Robert Ablett would have had to do as had been written.
If not, I suggest that you do get it, that MIGHT answer some questions, eg if he left something to Frederica and/or her mother ................. I find it interesting that they are living at the same address in 1911.
My theory of the heir and spare comes from the fact that we once had a neighbour here who had never married, but at over 55 realised owned a house and had some money but no heir ............ so he went to a foreign country, married a very young woman, brought her back, they had 1 child ............... and never co-habited again.
He made a small flat in his basement and lived down there while wife and daughter lived upstairs! He paid most living costs for them although the wife did get a job, sent the child to a private school and was thrilled when she won a scholarship to one of the top US universities.
Daughter got most of his estate when he died, wife sold the house and moved elsewhere in the city.

Incidentally, I don't know whether you had found this, but I noted that Frederica and her mother also seemed to use the name Thomson on earlier censuses.
