AustinQ no all the children have not been followed through to 1911. I would not worry about these too much it was Eliza born 1823 that I was particularly interested in.
Thank you to everybody who has helped.

I haven't forgotten this search- just getting no where fast!
the possibilities of surnames for Chattenton is a challenge- that's the polite term, but I'm thinking blooming nightmare is more apt. :-
Chattenton Chatterton Chattenden Chitterton Chittenden etc....
Have all the children now been followed through to the 1911 census?
I'll be around tomorrow morning- a fresh head might find something.

I wondered whether there actually was a Mr Chatterton in the picture who would then (possibly) be the father of the later child.
The only reasonable candidate anywhere in the vicinity whom I could find in 1861 was:
Name: James Chatterton Age: 34 Estimated birth year: 1827 Relation: Soldier Gender: Male Where born: Boston, Lincolnshire, England Civil Parish: Woolwich Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary Town: Woolwich County/Island: Kent Country: England Registration district: Greenwich Sub-registration district: Woolwich Dockyard ED, institution, or vessel: Royal Artillery Barracks
In 1881 and 1891 he is a boarder with his sister in Lincolnshire, shown as single.
In 1901 and 1911 he is a Chelsea inpensioner, shown as widowed.
1901
Name: James Chatterton (widower) Age: 73 Estimated birth year: abt 1828 Relation to Head: Inpensioner Gender: Male Birth Place: Fishtoft, Lincolnshire, England Civil Parish: Chelsea Registration district: Chelsea Sub-registration district: Chelsea, South ED, institution, or vessel: Royal Hospital
and now I'm blamed if I can find him in 1911 again, which should be easy, since it certainly was last night.
and can't find a suitable death.
EDIT
I obviously dreamt the 1911.
Deaths Jun 1904 CHATTERTON James 77 Chelsea 1a 238
Actually I misremembered.
He is recorded as single in Lincolnshire boarding with his sister in 1871 and 1881.
He is recorded as single in 1891 and widowed in 1901 as an inpensioner.
Name: James Chatterton Age: 67 Estimated birth year: abt 1824 Gender: Male Where born: Leek, Lincolnshire, England Civil Parish: Chelsea Ecclesiastical parish: St Luke County/Island: London Country: England Registration district: Chelsea Sub registration district: Chelsea, South ED, institution, or vessel: Royal Hospital
FMP has a service record for him
Chatterton James born 1827 — date 1844 British Army Service Records born Fishtoft, Boston, Lincolnshire, England
but my sub has expired.

AustinQ I wonder if that is her, birthplace is wrong and year slightly out.
I can find n/t of a marriage between Thomas and Eliza, so maybe they weren't married.
Just as a matter of interest The Odd Fellows Arms (still there) and the Dartford workhouse are about 100 yards from each other.

I was thinking of Eliza 1823.
I cannot find a death, re-marriage or census record for her.
She goes from Eliza Box in 1851 to Eliza Chattenton (check spelling) in 1861 after her husband dies in 1859.

Don't think Eliza Snr. has been found after 1861. As her youngest children were in the workhouse in 1871, it would appear likely that she had died. She herself may have been in the workhouse or even remarried and left the girls in the workhouse until she could offer them a home with her.

John - compulsary registration of births didn't come in to effect until 1873. Unitl then it was up to the Registrar to visit the villages to ask if there had been any births and to persuade the parents to register them. Many parents didn't bother or only had their children baptised so that there was an 'offical' record.
