Thank you all for your help. Within a few days of asking you have found Stanley's birth details of where and when he was born and where his mother, Lilian, was living at the time.

I cannot thank you all enough.

All I need now is to discover details of Stanley's father, Thomas Healey.

This on a probate record, presumably died at the hospital which separated from the workhouse c1913.

On the 1911 census, after 31, 33, and 35 West Hill, the next address is Essex Road, do not know where the enumerator goes then as he wanders around the district.

I also went backwards from 47, 45 and ended up at the Convent after 43, then nothing as start of route.

Looks like Westwood farmhouse had a oast house for hops:

Maybe if Thomas Healey was some sort of itinerant farm worker, such as a hop picker, they were just on the move so much that they slipped through the census net.

It certainly seems that Thomas and Lilian weren't married.

Re 'the Huts', you may well be right about the hop pickers. On the other hand, my impoverished ancestors had 'The Huts' Lime Terrace Warlingham as their address in 1891, and they weren't even farm workers, so maybe it just refers to a somewhat downmarket dwelling.

Westwood, Southfleet was the address given for Thomas Healey, farmworker and Lilian on the baptism register. Maybe Thomas Healey worked on Westwood Farm?

After some googling, seems my hunch was right, and 37 West Hill is either the hospital or associated workhouse, according to a thread about the address on another genealogy site:

It's probably just co-incidence, but I beliew Dartford workhouse fronted on to West Hill, and sometimes with Workhouses an address was given, rather than 'The workhouse' to avoid stigma. I have no idea whether the workhouse would have been recorded as No 37, nor any evidence for that.

Even if it was, Lilian may just have gone in there to give birth, as pre NHS it was often the only place poorer women could gtr medical assistance.

I might be totally off beam with this though.

The copy of Stanley's birth certificate has arrived. His DOB is 6th October 1906 so it seems this must be the Stanley Frederick Healey/Cockshaw I have been searching for.

The place of birth is given as 'The Huts, Westwood, Southfleet'. Am I correct in thinking these 'Huts' were where the summer 'hop pickers' lived during their stay whilst working?

The address of mother Lilian Healey is given as 37 West Hill, Dartford. I cannot find this address on the 1911 census.

Any ideas to trace the father, Thomas Healey, occupation Farm Labourer. Have no other info for him.

Stanley Healey lived in the Loughborough, Leicestershire area during the years 1914 to 1919, he remembered being settled in school during this time as previously it seemed he was moving from place to place at short intervals. Lily Healey married Harry Cockshaw in Loughborough in 1915.

Harry Cockshaw was wounded in Nov/Dec 1916 during WW1, his relatives were listed as living in Loughborough at that time.

I have nine different addresses for Harry and Lily Cockshaw 1922 to 1944.

I also searched on December quarter 1906 page 632 anywhere, but with that Dartford baptism we do have information.

How would the Church know that they were not married, if they just claimed they were......

Re Stanley's birth record - it's not just that Stanley doesn't seem to be on the GRO index image, but the reference details don't make sense.


Searching Dec qr 1906 on FreeBMD just with the volume and page numbers of 2A 632 (no place name, no person's name) produces no results at all, anywhere.

Searching Dartford Dec qr 1906 (no person's name, no ref. nos.) produces lots of results, all with vol no 2A, but none with page no 632.

If you're ordering a copy of it, Malcolm, it will be interesting to see if GRO can produce one.

I also cannot find any records from 1911 for Stanley, Lilian or Harry. As Harry Cockshaw was a regular soldier from 1901 to 1913 I presumed he would be with his unit in 1911.

I also cannot find record of marriage between Thomas Healey and Lilian. Am I correct in thinking that, in 1906, a couple would have to be married to have their child baptised?

Can I thank you all for the interest you have shown and the details supplied, especially patchem and kucinta, the link to the 1906 baptism was completely new to me and I am trying to follow it up.

In 1911 census 21 and 22 Goodwin Street have lodgers, including those staying just overnight.
