and Wow again Chris! So date might be right as I am way off with her birth date! Although in census records it is around 1843 - oh well!

I now remember why my research ground to halt - its so addictive. I am meant to be doing my VAT tax return and instead am addicted to doing this, and keep getting side tracked! Finding more out is so much more fun than entering receipts and VAT!

Victoria Report 1 Jan 2017 13:22

I have just found Mary Rogers marriage to William Thomas although I think the date is wrong, it is recorded as 7 Feb [1856?] and she would have only been 13 if this was correct so think it is wrong

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SOUTH-AM-EMI/2003-12/1070756331

Record reads:
p403 Marriage 7 Feb [1856 ?] Chincha Islands, Peru
William THOMAS, bachelor, born Manchester, master barque 'Lord Stanley'
Mary ROGERS, spinster, born Caernarvon
by J J BALLIENE, Chaplain HMS 'Tribune'
in board [ship] 'Glenmanna' at Chincha Islands
witness Hugh ROGERS, master 'Glenmanna'; Thomas WILLIAMS; Charlotte STEVENS

Hugh Rogers being her father, and them marrying on his ship the Glenmanna.

There was a brother of hers called Samuel, much younger though and her mothers maiden name was Samuels! I must admit I didn't expect marriage certificates to be inaccurate. Hugh Rogers was def her father, I've had quite a lot of success with this side of the family

That marriage of Annie Rogers and William Williams is definitely my people as Annie's father was Hugh Rogers and he was a master mariner.

As for the Nelson's I am not convinced this is the right family as Minnie will have only been 8 in 1881 and would surely have been with the family?

It is so frustrating as it would seem there is no record of her birth in Shanghai, I believe all the records were destroyed in a fire and it is that birth certificate which holds the key. I have loads of photos of her, houses and ships with her either outside or on, but none of them hold any clues to her parents. Her marriage certificate is the only clue with father down as Andrew Nelson, master mariner, deceased. My Great Aunt (Minnie's daughter) remembered being on board ship as a child and spent many hours telling us stories, and spoke of her mother and father fondly but never mentioned her grandparents.

If the place of marriage (Li?pore) is actually Singapore, you might find the marriage at the GRO (or maybe SP - I'm not clear of nationality of father)

At SP, Foreign Returns include ... the Register of Marriages in Foreign Countries, which comprises marriages of Scottish persons (1860 - 1965).
You used to have to set the county to minor records in the marr search screen.

There were no marrs on British ships from 1837 on until abt 10 y ago.
The law was changed then to allow marrs on vessels in Scottish inshore waters - the marr would be rego'ed with the nearest onshore civil parish

Chris, I think the death you found in the newspaper is our man as the whole family were based in Anglesey and it isn't a big place, and matches the address on the will/probate.

Chris - and again thank you!

The more I think about it, the more I am sure that before I found a record of the marriage on board ship for William Williams and Annie Rogers so am now looking back - my advice to anyone is not to take 6 years off from researching your family tree as it is a nightmare trying to remember and find all the bits of info!
