Austin, think you are right about it being Isiah William Mead - his service record has his signature on it and it is the same as the one on the marriage entry.

In Gordon's Service record their is a partly burnt page which has Christina's address on. Part is burnt but it looks like C/o Mrs T (Tiller?), Red Lion, Woo.

So, we have traced the witnesses but still doesn't help with Christina!

Kay- see page 1- address was checked, John Tiller living at the address she gave.

Looking at the writing, I think the witness could be I W Mead (the I looks a little like a J).
Maybe Isiah William Mead?

Potty Report 29 Oct 2016 11:58

Ancestry has the image of the parish record for the marriage; witnesses were J W Mead and H L Tiller. The marriage was by licence, not Banns.

Even if Christina was abroad in 1911, if she was with her father and he was in the Army, she should be on the census - Service personnel and their families were included.

Gordon S Wallace also has a WW1 record in it it lists wife as Christina Sarah Lloyd and date of marriage plus listed named children &dob up to 1926.

Can any lead be got from the marriage certificate,,address check, witnesses.?

She could have taken a stepfathers details. Is there any bapt for a Christina Sarah in London, Ancestry allows omitting a surname.

It's possible her father was in the Army during the Boar war so may have been killed earlier than ww1

So that Ancestry tree holder has made the same assumption that the Welsh birth is the right lady even though the birth date differs

The 1939 register and death cert both have the same date so Christina was sure of her birthday :-)

Autumnleaves....

I also found that one and [ ] apparently means the transcriber could not identify for certain the initial following the Christian name so those "possible" eg a B or S are put in brackets...Thought the same as you British Subject..!!

Gerry

Gerry Report 27 Oct 2016 17:03

Been through the Forces War Records on their website. Found ONE possible John Lloyd in that he was a Sergeant (no Major included) in the Army Service Corps. The possible problem is that his record, which refers to a medal (DCM) is dated 1916

Freebmd has the marriage listed as

Gordon S Wallace

Christina LLoyd .- with BS in brackets after her name

could that mean British Subject and that she was born abroad ?

Sorry for delay in posting but message disappeared on me twice last night.

Genes also had it listed under Gordon B Wallace ???

Thanks again everyone

Potty, that is a fabulous army record for Gordon. Had his left foot 4th toe amputated after being shot in the foot!! I spent ages printing it off last night. Never thought to look at his dates against what else we know. Thanks

Evelyn Mai Wallace was definitely born in Woolwich on 7/5/1915

Good thinking Austin.

I don't know if this is connected, but I was trying to find out from electoral registers who lived at the Charlinch Cottages in 1915.

I couldn't find Charlinch- but from tracing the people that were living there in 1911, I discovered the cottages were listed under '1 & 2 Sharpe's Yard" on the electoral register.

So, this is who was living there:

1913
2 Sharpe's Yard- John Tiller

1914
1 Sharpe's Yard- Sidney Hosgood
2 Sharpe's Yard- John Tiller

1915
1 Sharpe's Yard- Sidney Hosgood
2 Sharpe's Yard- John Tiller

One of the witnesses for the marriage was a H L? Tiller

Nothing coming up on SP. There is one Christina in Ireland's birth but that one appears to be on the Irish 1901 census with a father William.

Gordon's Army Record is on Ancestry and shows that he was in India until October 1914; the couple had a child in May 1915, so, unless she was born prematurely, either she wasn't Gordon's or she was conceived while he was in or on his way back from India.

Also, his record shows that he was in France at the time of the marriage, so must have got leave, probably why the marriage was by licence.
