Looking back I see that I acknowledged Alviegal and AustinQ as solvers of the Nancy and Pearl E Cawley problems. I didn't mention Greyghost who suggested Annie 1908 who married Trott. A good call, had May Barbara S N E not appeared on the scene.
I had not linked her birth to the Trott marriage and can also add also that to the website, and her parents when I find them.
Thanks again to all.

Like I said, no idea why or when she added the Pearl, but (without buying certificates) I'm pretty sure she's our person.

Good sleuthing, AustinQ. You and Alviegal seem to have cleared up for me. Yes I'd sought out the military file but so far only glanced at Wills for Alice without success.
I have no other candidate for Alice PE Stoner and 1911 says Annie had four children.
Many thanks, Alan

You could always try contacting Eileens's daughter (living in Hove), she may be able to confirm the above.

Your post seems a repeat of mine above! Perhaps Charles disowned her when he remarried?
1901 census of Frank and Annie posted above.
this is Annie in 1911 (Alice was in the workhouse infirmary):
1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 13 Channel View Road Eastbourne, Eastbourne, Sussex, England

Frank died in 1933- his military file is on Ancestry:

Charles Henry Stoner marries Pearl E Cawley in 1925, with daughter Eileen M in 1927, with mmn CAWLEY.
The 1939 transcrption (haven't seen the original) has Eileen M CLARKE (McCawley) which normally means she is currently MCCAWLEY but will later marry CLARKE which EIleen M STONER does in 1949. I would expect Eileen M CLARKE (Stoner)
Why should she be listed as McCAWLEY in 1939? Charles has remarried, allegedly as a widower. If Pearl CAWLEY was in fact Pearl McCAWLEY then Eileen is living with her grandmother. It seems Pearl's only mention is in the marriage index. I wonder whether Charles H and Pearl are visible in the Brighton Poll Books 1927-1930?
I haven't found Frank/Annie (in Ancestry) in 1901 or 1911. Any clues for me?

Alice is in the workhouse infirmary in 1911, that's why I didn't see her with family:
1911: First name(s) Alice Last name McCawley Relationship Inmate Sex Female Age 11 Birth year 1900 Birth place Sussex Eastbourne Address Eastbourne Parish Eastbourne County Sussex Archive reference RG14 Registration district Eastbourne Registration district number 71 Enumeration district 37 Sub district Eastbourne Sub district number 2 Census reference RG14PN4849 RD71 SD2 ED37 SN9999 Piece number 4849 -------------------------------------
and Alice & parents in 1901:
1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 66, Windsor Road, Bexhill, Battle, Sussex, England
Frank MacAulay Head Married Male 31 1870 Carpenter & Joiner Canada Annie MacAulay Wife Married Female 24 1877 - Eastbourne, Sussex, Alice MacAulay Daughter Single Female 1 1900 - Eastbourne, Sussex, ------------------------------------
So, after Alice Pearl E Stoner (nee McCawley/ Cawley) died, her daughter Eileen was raised with surname McCawley with her Grandmother.
Hopefully that's another one solved :-) Although why & when she added Pearl I don't know?

Of course it was Marries- don't think I was firing on all cylinders!
I think I have it!
Was looking at this death- was thinking it could be Alice Pearl E?
First name(s) ALICE P E Last name STONER Gender Female Birth year 1900 Age 29 Death quarter 1 Death year 1929 District PANCRAS County London Volume 1B Page 200 Country England -----------------------------------------------
Although she married as Cawley, we know from the 1939 register that her daughter was brought up with the name McCawley. So searching for Alice McCawley took me back to Frank McCawley and Annie Swift:

From Austin's query posted above:
"Unsure who the Marrie/ Massie S is- the date appears to be wrong if May was born a few months later?!"
I had been wondering about that too and in the night I had a 'brainwave' so looked again at that image this morning.
It actually says 'MARRIED' 9/11/08 !!!!!!! ;-) :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
Mystery over ;-)

AustinQ, Your posts occurred while I was typing my reply so I hadn't seen them. Yes the WWI pension info is the critical piece, thanks. 'Marrie S' is 'Married' in 4Q1908.
Yes, Frank is Alfred & Barbara's son - see http://www.stoner.org.uk/stoner2008/Ft2z.html#M324. Clicking on the marriage link M1106 and then the mother's maiden name Hudson shows Frank's family - I now have to add daughter May. Charles was born before that marriage so you have to scroll up a line to see him - and clicking on his marriage link. The Cawley marriage and family is at http://www.stoner.org.uk/stoner2008/Fc2d.html#M1529 and Eileen's marriage is seen by clicking on the M2264 link. If he was widowed by 1930 there should be a Pearl death between 1927 and 1930 but I can't see one. Tomorrow perhaps!
Many thanks, Alan

Seems there was a possible daughter to the Stoner/ Cawley marriage.
Births Dec 1927 (>99%) Stoner Eileen M Cawley Brighton 2b 239 ---------------------------------------------------
and a possible marriage for Eileen in 1949:
First name(s) EILEEN M Last name STONER Marriage quarter 2 Marriage year 1949 Spouse: ALEC S CLARKE District HOVE County Sussex Volume 5H Page 668 --------------------------------------------
Eileen died in 1990: First name(s) EILEEN MARIE Last name CLARKE Gender Female Birth day 29 Birth month 9 Birth year 1927 Death quarter 1 Death year 1990 District BRIGHTON Register number 190 County Sussex Volume 18 Page 255 --------------------------------------------------------
This appears to be her on the 1939 register- she is under the name McCawley:
Clarke (McCawley) Household 56 Eastern Avenue , Hailsham R.D., Sussex, England Eileen M Clarke (McCawley) 29 Sep 1927 Female At School Single
There are 3 closed records before Eileen and three after --------------------------------------
When I type the address into the 1939 register, these also appear at the same address:
McCa?Uley Household 56 Eastern Avenue , Hailsham R.D., Sussex, England Annie McCawley 08 Dec 1877 Female Unpaid Domestic Duti Widowed Patrick McCawley 14 Feb 1916 Male Licenced Taxi Cab Dri Single 1 closed record ('at school' just visable) ---------------------------------------------
Annie was Annie Swift, she married Frank McCawley- I found them on the 1901 & 1911 census but I don't see a daughter 'Pearl' with them -------------------------------------------
Eileen had a daughter, Eileen in 1950. Likely marriage for daughter Eileen in 1969- and is listed on the 2014 electoral register in Hove.

Given that May Barbara was his daughter, this looks likely for Frank in 1881:

Apologies for delay in responding. BT had sent everything to the online spam folder.
1939 - someone speculated that columns were transcribed by different people and the results merged. As noted, the names, dates of birth, and households have slipped a column, so Charles is in a different household, Elizabeth has his birth date, and Basic has his mother's, etc..
Charles is definitely (from the m/c I mentioned) Charles Henry with father Frank.
Thanks for the 6/10/1876 birth date for Frank. I knew the 1939 register said 1876, conflcting with the 1911 census, but this is more specific and matches the December 1876 baptism I had assumed was him.
So yes, it looks as though father-in-law guessed the ages, Frank as 40 instead of 44, Charles Henry 6 instead of 9, and maybe Nancy 2 instead of Annie 6. Unless it was the suggested May Barbara S N E Stoner 30/3/1909 at 3 Bath Street in 1939 who is not obvious in 1911and I think the only Stoner I've come across with five forenames. That's an interesting possiblity. I wonder whether the N was for Nancy.
Thank you all for your contributions. If you are still looking for puzzles, I said Charles Henry's 1930 m/c showed him as a widower. He was born in 1902 so unless he married in 1918, the only other candidate Charles H Stoner marriage was to Pearl E Cawley in 1925.
About whom I have so far found nothing.
Thanks again,
Alan

Just to confirm that Alec Charles is not correct as he appears on the 1911 with parents Charles John and Fanny Maria.
