Hi Flip,
sorry just seen this message, I can't remember if I did find out any more about James or who asked me about him but I will go through my notes, ( of which there are many ) and see what I can find.
regards
jean

ArgyllGran,
thank you very much for this, as I say I am trying to help someone else to find James and so please don't use any credits , I am passing all this information on so it will be up to them to go on SP. All the James on the 1911 census have been looked at but so far none of them match the James we are looking for. On his wife's death cert it says married to not widow of James Dalrymple. The children are on the 1911 Irish census living with their aunt but spelling is Dalrimple.

I'm tempted to think this might be James's death:
1909 DALRYMPLE JAMES M 29 CALDERHEAD /LANARK 626/0B 0012
EDIT: No, it's not!
I gave in to temptation, spent a few credits, and had a look.
That James was a coal miner, married to a Margaret.

Rosetta's death cert would say if James had predeceased her or not. Of course, it wouldn't say when.
1953 DALRYMPLE ROSETTA Other surname MCERLANE F 73 CALDERHEAD /LANARK 626/0B 0077

Don't want to pour cold water, but have doubts about that one, Dea.
[EDIT: Typing while you posted your last message! I see you doubt it yourself now!}
Apart from slight differences in YOB and occupation (though the image of the US incoming passenger list below does say he's an iron moulder, so not too dissimilar, I suppose) , the man Jean's friend is looking for was born Ireland, not Scotland.
The Kirkintilloch man claims to be single, and Scottish. His father was James Dalrymple of 103 Townhead, Kirkintilloch. No mention of Ireland.
James Dalrymple in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: James Dalrymple Arrival Date: 4 Apr 1911 Birth Date: abt 1881 Birth Location: Scotland Birth Location Other: kirkentelloah [ Kirkintilloch] Age: 30 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scottish (Scotish) Port of Departure: Glasgow, Scotland Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Furnessia

Apologies - I do not now think that the one who went to New York was the one you are looking for - I believe this is probably him and David Duncan on 1901:

Thanks very much ArgylleGran,
I will let the person who is looking for him know . Although I am pretty sure he would have checked the 1911 for him.

He doesn't appear to be in England, Wales, or Ireland in 1911.
There are a few possibilities in Scotland - you can view the original census documents for the price of a few credits on Scotlands People:

safc,
thanks very much for this information. I am actually trying to help find this chap for someone else, so any help is great. His wife Rosetta went into Hartwood asylum c 1911 and the children went back to Ireland to stay with family but James seems to have disappeared during this time .
