Article in the Falkirk Herald dated 13 Mar 1915

William Paterson of 37 Main Street, Bainsford, Falkirk
Article relates to his swift promotion from Private- Corporal- Sergeant in Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and still only 20 yrs old.

However....
The article also mentions his younger brother, James Paterson
At time of print, James was serving with :
Falkirk Company of Territorials at the front ( not A&SH)

Find My Past (FMP) searches variations such as Paterson/ Patterson so I don't think you'll find James record on there.

You may be able to search for free on FMP, but you'll need a subscription to view any results.

Unfortunately I don't see service/ pension records for either of the men listed- not surprising as many didn't survive.

Thanks Austin for your look up I can now safely say No 1450 James Paterson is not the person I am looking for.
Interesting note told this morning by old family members that James Paterson was a lance corporal in command of a machine gun team of four men. when they went over the top he was shot in the elbow returned to the line other three in his team where killed.

Ian- I've just confirmed through FMP that the James Paterson No. 1450 was born 4th November 1896 in Inveraray and has parents Andrew & Christina....

He was discharged as medically unfit (flat foot) 22 Feb 1915 Bedford.

Ian Report 22 Aug 2016 10:42

Hi Austin
I have checked on Ancestry as Chris instructed and only see John Paterson's listed there?
The James Paterson No 1450 that Sylvia posted looks good. Family believe he received the 14/15 star so he must have be shot and then discharged from duty 1915

I found this record for 8th Battalion A&S
1/8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion Territorial Force
04.08.1914 Stationed at Dunoon, Argyll as part of the s part of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Brigade of the Highland Division and then moved to Bedford.
15.04.1915 Transferred to the 1st Highland Brigade.
May 1915 Mobilised for war and landed in France.
12.05.1915 The formation became the 152nd Brigade of the 51st Division and engaged in various actions on the Western front including;

The 1914 – 15 Star was a campaign medal of the British Empire, for service in World War one.

This Star is identical with the 1914 Star in every respect except that the centre scroll bears the dates “1914- 15” and the two small scrolls bearing “Aug” and “Nov” are omitted.

The 1914-15 Star was approved in 1918, for issue to officers and men of British Imperial Forces who saw service in any theatre of war against the Central Powers between 5th August, 1914, and 31st December, 1915,
