Brent Report 8 Aug 2017 02:26

Thanks Dea x! This is great info. My grandfather was the son who signed. The address listed on Gertrude's certificate was where he died. One thing I've come to understand is the old records have lots of typos.

Finding this post makes me can't believe how small the world is. I'm really hoping Alison looks at this.

Have a good one.

Dea Report 6 Aug 2017 09:06

You can find Fred and Gertrude's actual death certs here:

Fred's death cert:

http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Image/Genealogy/bd0e689d-4471-4688-8eb3-e5e53508bf80

Gertrude's death cert:

http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Image/Genealogy/895e7466-0d53-41e5-9126-25af4fce3975

Strangely this gives her mother as 'Margaret' but this could, of course, have been an error.

Dea x

EDIT: OOoops! - I knew there was some reason why I didn't post this a couple of hours ago when I found it - this is an old thread ! ;-) Anyway, I will leave it here in case it is of any use to the new poster, Brent......

Welcome to the boards, Brent.

Although it's only a year since Alison posted here last, she may not be looking for more replies now.

Try contacting her by clicking on her name at the top of one of her posts, and sending a private message via the GR system.
GR will notify her that there's a message from you.

Please remove your email address from your post - it's against thread rules, and isn't advisable anyway, for your own sake, as this is a public site. Not a good idea for the whole world to know your address!

Hello Alison,
My name is Brent Cuff. My grandfather was George W Cuff. His mother and father were Fred and Gertrude Cuff (Jessie Fenwick). I happened upon this post as I was researching info found using ancestry.ca to build my family tree. I found the travel records from Oct 1924. When I started looking up Hunwick Lane Ends, Durham England I found this post at got goosebumps.

The Cuff's on my side still reside in Vancouver. I'd love to meet you and exchange info.

Sincerely,
Brent Cuff. George's youngest grandchild.

1921 - 570 Hornby St is really right downtown - the Art Gallery is just a couple of blocks S at 750 Hornby
I'll pm a copy of the 1921 image - 1921_018-E002874888.jpg
As I read it, Suman Pratt probably is Susana Pratt. She immig 1911, like Gert.
In BC, births are closed from 1904 on/for 120y (whichever's shorter) - since my kids are living adults, neither I nor my wife has a right to access them, even though we're both named on them.
Deaths are closed for 20y, and marrs for (I think) 85y.

http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Genealogy
A look up of Cuff deaths gets Fred, Gert and George (the son who rego'ed his parents)
A look up of Cuff marrs gets Gladys
A look up of Caff marrs gets Fred & Gert
[Christ Church Cathedral is also right downtownm 4 blocks E of Hornby, and a block nearer the harbour than 570]
I didn't look up Klein.

Neither did I trawl thru city directories, but if you fancy that, they're online until 1950-ish via:
http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php/

A phone look up for Cuff in the Langley area got 4 hits, see:

John says he was born in Witton Park which, as you probably know, was in the Hamsterley Subdistrict of Auckland RD
Although Hunwick was in Bishop Auckland Subdistrict, it's just 3km to NE, across the Wear. There are a couple of possible births for John:

Births Mar 1886 (>99%)
PRATT John Auckland 10a 208

Births Mar 1887 (>99%)
Pratt John Auckland 10a 183

My guess is we want the 1887 birth.

Our John is 4/14 in 1891/1901 if his father is Michael.
He's living in Witton-le-Wear in 1891, then across the river and even closer to Hunwick in 1901.
He's not with Michael in 1911 (but we know he's with Susannah a=24).

[John is headed for Chamberlain SK - he says he was a miner, but intends to take up farming.]

Canada's census nominal dates were 24/6/1906, then 1st June thereafter, so John was certainly in Canada in time for the 1911.
He had plenty of time to be in Chamberlain Sk if he went directly there, but whp knows what he actually did.
I can't find him in Chamberlain, but I don't know if he would get enumerated if he were on a train.

-------------------

It wasn't unusual for a male member of a family to go out first, get stuff like jobs and accomodation sorted, then send for the rest of the family.
Anyway, here's Gert, Susannah and wee Geo coming out.

As of 15/8/16: Latest box digitized: Box 5410 and Larocque.
They're doing abt 300 boxes per m, so it'll be abt 8 m before his service record is digitized and posted.
He's not listed as dead on CWGC. Anyway, in 8m time check at
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/canadian-expeditionary-force.aspx
Once you've gotten his service file, you can see which unit he served in.
He would probably do abt 6m basic training in Canada, then a further 3m in England before going to France.
In France, each unit kept a War Diary, which detailed on a day by day basis what the unit was doing.
The WDs for most units are online at LAC.
You might also check out Nicholson's:

Incidentally, John's dob of 14/01/1885 doesn't look right although the pob (Witton Park) looks OK.
My experience is that folk might lie abt the year, but they rarely lie abt their b'day, so I would guess dob was really 14/1/1887.
I would guess the whole family was out of the country before the 1916 prairie census.
John's service record would say if he went back to Canada and was denobbed there, or if he elected to be demobbed in the UK.

Fred Cuff arrives in Canada in 1904

Given Name(s):Fred
Surname:Cuff
Age:26

Port of Arrival:Quebec City
Date of Arrival:1904-06-00
Year of Arrival:1904

He says he's a farmer, and he's heading for Winnipeg MB.
The attraction of the prairies for farmers at that time was free land.
One could homestead land under the Dominion Land Act.
Basically, one paid a $10 filing fee, and got a claim on a quarter section (160 acres), and had 3 yrs to prove the claim.
One had to live on the land for 6m of every year, erect a domicile, and get 40 acres under crop (or provide for and raise an equivalent amount of stock).
Upon proving the claim, one got letters patent (i.e., title) on the claim.
Building a domicile in S Saskatchewan was awkward, due to the lack of trees, so often people built soddies (i.e., houses made of sod or turf), and later improved them as money for timber became available.

Now nearly all of the three prairie province (MB, SK, AB) were surveyed using a common system. I'll give an outline, but for more details on this, see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey

1906 Census Page Data
District: SK Humboldt District (#13)
Subdistrict: 02 (Townships 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 inclusive in ranges 17, 18, 19 west of the 2nd M, excepting Poor Man's Indian Reserve and those portions of Day Star's and Gordon's Indian Reserves in range 17) Page 15

http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/e/e049/e001208458.pdf
[addy = S20 T28 R19 W2M]

The addy is based on a grid system:
The Township is a northing count, starting at the US border, and counted in 6 mile blocks.
The Range is a westing count (easting in east MB), starting at the previous meridian, and counted in 6 mile blocks.
The 2nd meridian is longitude 102 deg, the 3rd meridian is longitude 106 deg, etc. One might have expected the 1st or prime meridian to be at 98 deg, but the meridian is actually offset by abt half a deg to the E, to align with the old provincial boundary of Manitoba (when it was the size of a postage stamp).
So that all locates a 6 mile x 6 mile block of 36 sections (a section is a 1 mile x 1 mile block). These 36 sections are always numbered in the same way.

I would presume he sold his farm and moved out West, possibly not in that order.
