Looking for William Campbell's ( known as the Red Man due to his bright red hair) place of birth and his parents. Know William was a member(share holder) of the New Zealand Company and helped with the colonisation of New Zealand in the 1830s.

Thanks for latest info, sounds very promising, will follow through. Dates for Harriet Anne and Alfred seem to correspond between dates William was at sea.. Still no closer to finding out where Adolphus was before 1948. Thanks once again for all your help. Pat

The family were living in York Square in the 1841 census already posted. They were apparently there at least from 1838, as Harriet Ann gives her address as 9 York Square on the register image:

In 1841, someone aged 15 +/- 5 years, would be away at work unless the family was wealthy.

Children went to work sometimes as young as 7.

I suggest searching the census on both ancestry and FMP (they have different transcriptions), using as many wild card symbols as you can .......... it replacing letters with the * symbol. This will pick up most wrong transcriptions, wrong spellings etc.

There must be a minimum of 3 letters, and searching usually works better if you do not replace the initial with *

Then try searching only on surname, birth year +/- 5 years, and England (do not use county or place on the 1841

Remember that the age of somebody over 15 on the 1841 was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 ............... hence why I say look for 1826 +/- 5

Then try searching on forename using the same parameters as above ...... but that'll be a long job.

Finally, try searching on only initial letters for both forename and surname inc ase he was in an asylum, hospital or jail.

However, so far as I know, there was no census taken of ships at sea or out of England.

ADOLPHUS CURTIOSE CAMPBELL. Still looking for ihfo from DOB 1826 to 1848 when he got his 3rd mates certificate from Trinity House. He's not on any UK census, his sister Susanna is on the 1841 census aged 9 but not Adolphus who would have been 15 or his brother Frederick Noble Campbell who would have been 10. Have all info on Adolphus's life in Australia and Frederick's life in New Zealand. Where did William and Annie Susanna hide them, at sea, at boarding school, with other relatives, who knows? Many thanks to all who have already helped.
