Hello again!
Promised I would update all you good people and this is the current state of play.
Have managed to trace mum's paternal family back to 1800 in Scotland and more work to do. No joy at all with the maternal side. My grandmother was born in Ireland in 1875 and her name was Josephine Berwise (father Michael, described as a farmer on grandmothers marriage certificate). None of the many sites I have dipped into have unearthed any information. If anyone has any suggestions to move that search on I would be most grateful.
No progress on the half brother but I am not giving up.
Still working on descendants of mum's siblings.
Thank you again for all your help.
Happy New Year to you all.
Dorothy

Glad you have now managed to get your Mum's birth certificate.
In 1881 your grandfather John is with his maternal grandmother. Haven't managed to spot his Mum with her husband Thomas Munro in 1881.

Good evening everyone.
Happy to report that I now have the certificates and can confirm that Mum was born Lilian Margaret Crout on the 26th September 1919. Mum married Walter Steeden in 1940. Both mum and Walter remarried in 1954 but I have been unable to trace a divorce record.
Have had no luck tracing the mystery half brother in either the Steeden married name or the Crout family name but I will keep trying.
Have traced marriages for all mum's siblings (all now deceased) and now plan to try and trace their offspring.
Granddad was a Lance Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders and I have paid a small fee so their volunteer researchers to look for his service record.
Cannot tell you how much all this means to me - I have a sense of connection that I never had before and you set me on that road.
Will update you again if I manage to actually trace my cousins!
Thank you again. Dorothy x

Perhaps they did divorce and the records haven't survived?
Could this be a remarriage for Walter?

Hello super team.
Update - and it is all thanks to you.
Have no idea why I had not considered that mum might have been married before but it seems that was the case. I believe mum was one of six (found so far) children of John and Josephine Crout.
I am still waiting for a huge batch of various certificates but the clincher is the birthplace of my grandfather (Scotland) and grandmother (Ireland) as stated on the 1911 census. Mum had talked about their relationship and said how it was extraordinary that a protestant from Scotland and a catholic from Ireland were so devoted to each other. I was beginning to think I had imagined all those conversations because I kept following the Steeden name and that indicated a very different heritage.
Interestingly, I can find no record of a divorce for mum and Walter Steeden. If that is so then her marriage to my dad was bigamous and we all know what that makes me!
Once I have more information will certainly share with you.
I had been hitting brick walls for ages and you now have me on the right track- thank you so much.
