Hi i have been looking for my Great Grandparents Marriage for William Hadley. William was born abt 1862 in Wolverhampton, his Parents were Edward Hadley and Martha Alcock. Edward and Martha were Married at Lapley, Staffordshire . I have the 1901 Census and 1911 Census, both state that he was married but no wife. William has two children Thomas, born abt 1890 Wolverhampton and Charles William Hadley born 1892 also Wolverhampton. The trouble im having is, that there are loads of Hadleys and most are called William. In the 1901 Census William was living with his two Sons and his Mother a Widow in Compton Street. I have looked on FreeReg and the LDS site and im on Ancestry as well and there is nothing. Hope someone can help me with this as my Great Grandmother is really Foxing me. Thank you Regards Ann

Records on Page: Name Thomas Ashford Fanny Blakemore William Hadley Caroline Payne
Not sure that's the correct couple though as William in 1911 has been married 29 years but states 2 children born and 2 living. The William with Fanny on the 1891 census has more than 2 children.

See if you can find the children's births on http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=staffordshire Sometimes the MMN is given.
The same site can be used to tie together marriages. Do bear in mind that the references they give won't be the same as the GRO and vice-versa

Hi Issitt, I think it is quite possible that he and his wife separated and he took up with the housekeeper. The birth certificate of one of his children is definitely needed here.
I know you say you have checked the family posted by safc in 1891 but this could be a possible. Working backwards from 1911.

Williams Father was Edward Hadley a Blacksmith. Edward Died 1883, William says he was married for 29 years in the 1911 Census, so 1882, have checked most of the marriages in and and around this date do not have Edward as the Grooms Fathers name. on any of them. 1911 and 1901 Census they were in Compton Street. Fanny Blakemore, Frances Hargrave, Mary A Taylor, also Elizabeth Killworth, Jane Jukes do not work. Found 2 births for Thomas and Charles his sons both in West Bromwich. Thomas born 1890 and Charles William in 1893, there is also a Marriage to Jane Jukes but that is for a William Henry and does not work. Regards Ann

How do you know that William's father was Edward please as there is no sign of William with them on ANY census.
Given that Martha was born around 1819/20 on all the census's, do you think it more likely that he could be the child of their daughter Ann, born in 1844?

I have his Marriage Certificate to Elizabeth Eleanor Bayliss Dec. 25. 1911 at The Parish Church of St Paul Wolverhampton both 19 years of age Charles William, Dock Porter, address 22 Compton Street, Father William Hadley, Fathers Occupation, Forgeman, Elizabeths abode was 13 Dale street, she was a presser. I do have a but as on my Fathers Birth Certificate it Says Charles Henry Hadley as his Father and not Charles William as is on the Marriage Cert? In answer to Dea i think that she might have a point about Ann being his Mother, but it does state on the 1901 Census that Martha is his Mother, maybe William was never told who his real mother was, as this did happen where Grandparents and Parents raised their Childrens Offsprings as their own, and William being born in 1862 is quite a Gap, Ann did have a Brother William either born in 1842 or was her twin as there is another birth for a William in 1844, but died the same year. Unless Martha Fell pregnant when late in life which also happened, women often got pregnant when they were going through the Menopause. Looks like Ann Married the year after William was born in 1863, maybe Albert Dyke would not take William? I did find a third Marriage for Ann to a John Hood on 23 Feb 1884 at Lapley All this is a real Head Banger. It's nice to have fresh eyes and other opinions. I really do appreciate all the help :-S Regards Ann
