A LOCAL SOLICITOR'S MAINTENANCE CASE

WIFE "ON THE PARISH"


At the Nuneaton Petty Sessions on Thursday, Robert Edward Marshall, solicitor of Nuneaton, Hinckley and Leicester was summoned on the information of MR J Estlin, clerk to the Nuneaton Board of Guardians, for neglecting to maintain his wife, Emily Alice Marshall and thereby allowing her to become chargeable to the Common Fund of the Nuneaton Union-- PC Thompson proved leaving a duplicate of the summons with Mr J H Brownson, at the Abbey House, defendant's last known place of abode. Mr Estley briefly explained the circumstances of the case and said the parties had been married about 5 years. Differences then arose which led to a separation and Mrs Marshall's father sued defendant for the maintenance of his wife. The case was referred to arbitration and an award was made of 30s per week but, according to his instructions, not one shilling had been paid in respect of the same. Mrs Marshall's father had stated his inability to keep his daughter, and she had been admitted to the Workhouse, the Guardians giving instructions for proceedings to be taken under the Vagrant Act. Mr Estlin was then sworn, and said that, to the best of his belief, defendant was able to maintain his wife and he (witness) knew that she had become chargeable to the Union. A warrant was issued for defendant's arrest.
