Oh dear - this is getting really strange now! It's funny how you hear stories growing up and things turn out not quite how you recall them, but usually truth is in there and facts like newspapers help to pull it all into line. The bit i am having trouble with is if this is the right John Spooner, my great grandmother was living in Magill in 1937, not far from me and yet i never heard anything about her. I was born in 1963 and of course she would have been dead by then, but given all the stories i heard about other relatives, this all seemed odd. And also the frequency we would meet up with Maggie and Vi. I will send out a blanket email to extended family members and see what they can tell me.
Also only recently I was at dinner at some other parents place and was looking though a family history book they had and saw John Peter Spooner born in Eccleshall. I seem to recall he has family still in the 'riverland' of SA. That might be a good avenue of enquiry too.
But thanks so much for the detail. I'm thinking i should try and condense all that information into something more concise.

That is interesting that Aunty Ev came to Adelaide. I can imagine work would have then taken them to Sydney, can still picture the house in Balmain Rd. I have met Stan who was living in Dubbo but that is some time ago and he would be in his 90's if still living. I didn't meet Ron but heard about him. So it is all fitting.
What i find interesting are the enlistment places for Stan and Ron. Usually it is close to where they live but they are both very remote locations. Getting late now but will look up their service records. Its always surprising just how many family members got caught up in the wars, it really was a total community effort and you get the sense it was a whole lot less about the individual like we are now. Imagine what we could achieve if we all got behind something these days!
