Now Rose you have just possibly solved another mystery with this family whilst giving me yet another headache :-D

On 25th Dec 1912, my husband's grandmother was born. She was Kathleen Rooney aka Cass and I've never been able to find a birth for her under Shwanky or Rooney. She married Thomas Partridge in 1931 as Kathleen Rooney, father James Rooney, dec electrical engineer. Her siblings all changed their names to Rooney and her sister, Violet and brother, Ronald James were witnesses. Her death is as Kathleen and in the 1939 Register she is also Kathleen.

The birth you have found for Rosina fits with Kathleen's birth but why, oh why would she change her name like that? Looks like I'll have to order yet another certificate :-S

Have you found her on 1939 register?

Can't believe it's been so long since I started this thread! Still being given the run around by some of them.

I finally found the marriage of Rachel Winifred Mabel Shwankey/ Swankey to Reginald James Rainforth in Cardiff 1926. She married as Mabel Winifred Sankey and was 23, a couple of years short of her real age. Sadly Reginald died a few months later when his ship went missing off Bermuda and all were presumed dead. She was not named in his probate record. He was from Hull.

My problem is now finding either a second marriage or a death for Mabel Winifred. I just can't find her at all.

Her father is named as James Stuart Sankey, dec marine engineer. Can't find anything on him either.

Thanks AG...easy mistake to make but with the potential to send people off on wild goose chases. One of the hazards of this genealogy lark. :-D

OOOH AG well done on finding that. There was a Hannah Stanton born 1891 and I wonder if that has been mistranscribed.

Well I have received Leslie's death certificate and he died 9 Nov 1910 in the Cardiff Union Infirmary. He was 13 months old so born Sept/ Oct 1909 and his father was James Shwankey, cook in the merchant service of Barry. He was registered by James R Ingledew, Master of the Union Workhouse, Cardiff.

So the poor little mite is definitely James' son and probably Jane's as well as she mentions one deceased child in 1911. I wonder if she was with him when he died, I do hope so.


I also received the MC for James Rooney and Jennie Morgan. He was 30, a dock labourer of 25 Foster Street, Cadoxton, Barry and his father was John Rooney (dec) General labourer.

Jennie was 33 and a widow of the same address. John Morgan (dec) Coal Trimmer was her father.

Witnesses were R Hyde and J T Lindsley, names unknown to me.


As you can see, Jane/ Jennie has shaved some years off her age but they are the same person. All her Shwankey children changed their names to Rooney after this marriage, I presume.

So I'm not much further forward :-(

That does look entirely possible. I think I will get the death certificate for Leslie Shwankey and take it from there.

Malyon, I agree that it is a very strange name that possibly is foreign. Would explain why it doesn't come up again.

i cant see any shwankeys or swankeys it sounds like a polish name

Jane married Shwanky in 1910 although she says in the 1911 census she has been married 11 years. All her other children are born as Shwankys but you are right, perhaps Leslie had a different father.

Will send for both the birth and the death certificates to try and sort this out.
