I am having great difficulty tracing this person:
1851 I have Ellen Brooks aged 8 daughter of William Brooks starch manufacturer of 59 Hercules Hall or Mansions Lambeth London SE 1861 Ellen Brooks aged 18 living with George an uncle - not sure this is right Ellen 1871 ?? 1881 ?? 1891 ?? the difficulty in this period she may have been an actress with a different name and lying about her age. We know later she used the surname HARRIS. Was she married? 1898 we know from a press report she was living at 7 York Rd Battersea as Mrs Eleanor HARRIS. I have not been able to trace her previous husband. 1899 marriage certificate has Ellenor HARRIS father Wm Brook starch manufacturer. She married my great uncle Edward Anwyl OWEN, linen draper. 1901 Helen HARRIS (Boarder/housekeeper) 7 York Rd born 1853 Lambeth!! She had been married to Mr OWEN for 2 years, but say she is Harris and a domestic. 1911 Ellin OWEN, 7 York Rd, aged 55 when she was really 68. I have not been able to find her death record; or whether she ever had children. Help!

Strange though Josiah says he is a widower in 1901
But his occupation is vastly out from his marriage of a hair roper so don't think it's the right Josiah

If she was actually 68 in 1911, she was quite a bit older than Edward Owen:
Just for helpers' reference:
Edward Anwyl Owen in the 1911 England Census Name: Edward Anwyl Owen Age in 1911: 44 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male Birth Place: Flintshire, Wales Civil Parish: Battersea County/Island: London Country: England Street address: 7 York Road, Battersea SW Marital Status: Married Occupation: DRAPER Registration district: Wandsworth Registration District Number: 26 Sub-registration district: North West Battersea ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Piece: 2207 Household Members: Name Age Edward Anwyl Owen 44 Ellin Owen 55
Have you found Edward in 1901, to see what he says about his marital state? (Not that it helps with your search for Ellen in earlier years.)

Are you sure about the 1901 you found for Helen Harris, boarder/housekeeper?
I wonder about this one - though she does say she's single:
Ellenor Brooks in the 1901 England Census
Name: Ellenor Brooks Age: 59 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Female Birth Place: London, England Civil Parish: Woolwich Ecclesiastical parish: St Thomas Charlton County/Island: London Country: England Street address: 19 Prospect Place Condition as to marriage: S Registration district: Woolwich Sub-registration district: Woolwich ED, institution, or vessel: 24 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 567 Folio: 139 Page Number: 18 Household schedule number: 121 Household Members: Name Age Ellenor Brooks 59 - aunt; draper <<<<<<<<<<<< Fanny Brooks 28 - niece; draper's assistant; born Oxford

Just as an aside - I think Josiah's occupation at marriage (and that of his father) is Hair Dresser. That's what his father's occ'n looks like, anyway, with the first s written as f.

If "Hair Dresser" was something to do with horse hair, not human hair, there's this Josiah in 1861:
Josiah Harris in the 1861 England Census Name: Josiah Harris Age: 15 Estimated Birth Year: 1846 Relation: Son Mother's name: Hannah Harris Gender: Male Where born: St Neots, Huntingdonshire, England Civil Parish: Limehouse Ecclesiastical parish: St John County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: Stepney Sub-registration district: Limehouse ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 189 Piece: 286 Folio: 46 Page Number: 32 Household Members: Name Age Hannah Harris 43 - widow, laundress Sarah A Harris 18 - daughter, laundress Josiah Harris 15 - son, horse hair manufacturer <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< George Harris 13 - son, ditto Eliza Harris 5 - daughter, scholar William Gilbert 48 - boarder Martha Gilbert 19 - boarder
EDIT:
No! Another good theory bites the dust. In 1851 his father is Dennis.

It would help to able to find a Josiah Richard Harris in the 1851 or 1861 census with father William a Hair Roper........so that we could establish when and where he was born.
Not having any luck though. :-(
Edit: I have just double checked the occupations of Josiah and father William on the marriage record. ArgyllGran you could be right about their occupation being "Hair Dresser"......The "fs" looks to be the old version of "ss"
At least it clears up who she married.
Prickles.

Thank you very much for this. Josiah R HARRIS is a big breakthrough. By the way my 1901 Helen HARRIS is definitely correct. Living with Edw OWEN, my great uncle.
