Squeaky020 Report 23 Feb 2016 11:49

Hello All,

I've been researching my family tree for 14 years on and off but I am still stuck with my paternal side.

My grandmother Joyce Davison was born 22/02/1928 in Dover, Kent.

I know that she was brought up in a childrens home.

Her mother was Ellen Davison (nee Hoare), she was admitted to St Augustine's Hospital, Chartham on 3rd May 1932 with paranoid schizophrenia
at the age of 37 and died on 6th November 1949 aged 54 from carcinoma
of the colon.

This is the reason I presume that Joyce went into a children's home as she was only 4 when Ellen was admitted.

I've recently discovered some paperwork in which my grandmother Joyce stated the she attended Sandwich Central School and Canterbury Technical College.

I'm still trying hard to locate the children's home !!

I would appreciate any help and am happy to answer any questions :-) :-) :-)

Donna.

FreeBMD shows other Davison children with mother's maiden name Hoare born in Dover. Are they the same family and do you know what happened to them?
Ruby, 1915, Helena 1916, Cyril C. 1924, Joyce 1928.
Parents married 1913.

Thanks Maddie for the info,

I do believe there were many siblings,

as you stated I have found -

Ruby 1915
Helena 1916
Hubert 1917
Joan 1921
Cyril/Claude 1924
Flossie 1926
Joyce 1928

The first 3 children have Henry Davison registered as father.
The last 4 children have the father's box crossed through. So I am unsure whether the father is the same for all the children.

I will check out the National Archives !

Squeaky020 Report 23 Feb 2016 12:26

I just had a look at the National Archives website,

I am just wondering if this will have any enrolment details.

Does Canterbury Technical College still exist?

Am I able to contact them directly?

Many Thanks.

Canterbury College was established in 1947 and has grown to be one of the largest Further and Higher Education Colleges in the South East, with campuses in Canterbury and Swale.

Their mission statement is “to be the best at teaching & learning” and they have about 10,000 students and 800 staff. The college predominantly provides Further Education courses to students 16 and up, with a growing provision in Higher Education courses as well as part-time courses for adult learners and flexible studying.

The College is situated near the centre of Canterbury, a city with a large student population.

Have you found any of the family on the 1939 register please?

Have you managed to trace any of the siblings? Wondering if that would help if Ellen and her husband split up although Ellen is listed as being married in 1939

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 23 Feb 2016 14:20

Many Thanks Ann for that information,

My grandmother was born 1928 which means she would have been 19 when Canterbury College was established.
I am wondering if there is an email address to contact about past pupils.

Hello RootGatherer,

I havent got a subscription to be able to view the 1939 register unfortunately, it would be a big help if my grandmother was found on there as she was born in 1928 and she would have been 9 years old. I am unsure if orphanages/children's homes would have been recorded on the register??

As for siblings, I have traced Flossie, born 1926 as she was brought up in the same children's home as Joyce and they remained close until Flossie died in 1953.
Ruby born 1915 - I have her Birth cert but nothing at all after has been found.
Helena born 1916, I have her birth cert but cannot find anything after then.
Joan born 1921 - have birth cert but again nothing after.

On Ruby and Helena's father's name Henry Davison (born 7 May 1893 Manchester)
I have a bit of info on Henry, married Ellen Hoare 1913 in Dover. Served in the war.

Ellen went into St Augustine's hospital in 1932.

Henry remarried Amy Cooper in Liverpool 1941.
Henry died 1963 with the informant being N.Davison - Son. cannot find any info on this son.

Still do not know if Henry is 4 of the children's father!

Hi Mavis,

Can I please ask where you found that information?

What does incapacitated mean?

your help is appreciated.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 23 Feb 2016 15:33

As Mavis has posted, Ellen is on the 1939 register, still institionalised.

I have tried looking for some of Joyce's siblings on the register without success. I just wondered if they had been listed on it under a different surname. If you would like to post Ruby and / or Helena's exact date of birth I can search using that.

Oh wow, thats from the 1939 register??

I appreciate people taking the time to look.

Is Kent Mental Home - Bridge - I presume would be St Augustine's which is where she died in 1949.

Helena Davison - 6 May 1916 - 18 Worthington Street, Dover is the address given for where born.

Ruby Davison - 4 January 1915 - 9 Eric Road, Dover.

Father is stated on both certificates. Corporal Sergeant Major.

Help is appreciated.

Help is appreciated.

rootgatherer Report 23 Feb 2016 15:44

Under occupation on the 1939 register Ellen is listed as incapacitated (unable to work). All the patients are listed as incapacitated which you would expect in an institution accommodating patients with (in some cases, long term) mental health issues.

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 23 Feb 2016 15:49

Joyce was married twice -

in 1948 to Haig Hamilton-Welsh
then in 1954 to Charles William Johnson

Flossie who later went by the name of Florence Beryl (everyone called her Beryl)
married Donald Edgar Rice in 1949.

Puzzles me why I cannot find any trace of Ruby or Helena other than birth, they were the first two born and around 15 years before Ellen went into a home.

Ellen's maiden name was Hoare.

Many thanks.

Paranoid schizophrenia I was told by Kent Archives, I was hoping it may mention spouse or children - but that is all the information they would give me in the email.

I wish I was closer to the archives to look for myself :-( :-(

Would you be willing to please send me the image Rootsgatherer?
I would be very grateful as I like to document everything I can into folders.

Sorry to have built up your hopes but no joy finding the girls using their given first names and date of birth on the 1939 register. Most annoying! I can't see any of the children on it.

Any more info on Henry please? Maybe we can find him and see who he's living with. Occupation? Date of birth maybe? Where he was living when he remarried?

Squeaky020

Squeaky020 Report 23 Feb 2016 16:17

Henry was living on his own at 183 Edge Lane, Liverpool in 1939 and was a Ministry of Labour Clerk.

Where on earth were his children in 1939 :-)
