The name could have changed purely because a lot of people were illiterate at the time so weren't sure how to spell their names. It could also be that enumerator wrote the down how he heard it and so wrote it down incorrectly. There are a number of reasons. Can be a bit confusing so that is why it is important to keep an open mind when researching your ancestors. |

Unfortunately it looks as though you will probably never know the name of George's father. You could try buying a copy of his birth certificate to see if his mother noted it on there, but if he didn't put his father's name on his marriage certificate it could well be that his mother never told him his name. |

thanks again everyone - I've just been digesting this, seems George's mum was indeed unmarried (quite a brave thing to bring up kids I guess for that time) & Charles 'Sprague' was indeed his brother, thanks Margee & Catherine. Could people just change their surname willy nilly back then...I always thought I was a 'Spregg' but now I have no clue |

She does seem to have been a bit of a girl your Harriet. She was either the mistress of someone who wasn't free to marry her, or just out for a good time. You would need to buy a copy of the birth certificates for all of her children to see if they all had the same father, but then again a lot of money to waste if there is no name noted. ;-) |

thanks for looking Andrew...I know Charles (we think brother of George) married Fanny, I've seen the gravestone in Stow cemetery...I wonder whether that was brother & sister (if that was allowed in those days) & if so that was why me dad was never allowed into the 'other family' secret??? I will continue my search ;-) |
