On the 1911 Census where Jeffrey is a Boarder in the same house as Ann Williams, that one says he is born in Redmire (???), is a Cotton Weaver, and has been married 9 years, with 3 children
Is it the same person listed in 2 separate places???

aaarrrrrgghhhhhhhh
Redmire is in Yorkshire .......... and there is this Jeffrey Metcalfe showing up on the 1901 born in Redmire and living with his mother in Nelson

Jeffrey Metcalfe born in Redmire, and living in the same house as Ann Williams in 1911 married Sarah Annie Cockshutt
The death of Sarah Annie Metcalfe in June quarter 1939 would fit rather nicely with Jeffrey and Ann getting married in the September quarter.

Oh my goodness. Such a lot of information ..thank y ou everybody. . Yes...guess he couldn't get a divorce ...had to wait all that time to be officially married. .. :-S Wonder if he actually had children with Sarah Annie cockshutt. And wonder if she found another man to live with. ? Can anyone see her on the 1911 census ? :-)
|
Shirley ..........
I looked and looked, tried all the tricks, and haven't been able to find her!
|
I wonder if this could possibly be Sarah Annie in 1911????
It is Metcalfe on the image

and this looks as though it could be the child ..............
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1902

I'm guessing this is the birth on freebmd, as Burnley is the Registration District for Nelson .......

and wonder if this could be his death ..............
Deaths Dec 1903 (>99%)

it's worth remembering that the lancs bmd site often (but not always) has the mother's maiden name well before mid-1911 when one can find it on freebmd
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Jeffrey and Sarah Annie married in December quarter 1901 .......... ie, between mid-September and December 31st
James was born in March quarter 1901, ie between end of December 1901 and end of March 1902
it is tempting to suggest that Jeffrey "did the right thing", but the marriage didn't last.
They were very young ............. only 17 or 18
Of course, divorces were far harder to get and extremely expensive back then
|
Yes this is probably true.... though you have to feel sad for Sarah Annie who never got married again but its nice that Jeffrey stayed with Ann all those years. Thanks for finding Sarah Annie. I did look for children of Jeffrey and Sarah on Lancashire bmd but because of spelling cockshott/cockshutt..I missed it. Thanks again. :-)
|
I was wrong when I said the following
"Jeffrey and Sarah Annie married in December quarter 1901 .......... ie, between mid-September and December 31st"
they would have married between October 1 and December 31 as marriages were registered immediately.
It is only births were there is a 6 week period after the birth for registration to take place.
As regarding Sarah Annie ....... we don't know that she didn't actually meet someone else between 1911 and her death. She might well have done so, and lived common-law, as Jeffery and Ann did.
The only way to find out would be to buy her death certificate and see who registered it, OR to contact the Local Archives and Study Centre to see if they can find an obituary for her in a local newspaper ... that would or should also list any family members
