Probably not related as a too late for the birth of Maisie, but I did wonder what the rumours were!

Dover Express 26 April 1907
NOTICE!
On behalf of the family of Miss Edith Blackman, a barmaid, at present in the Royal Victoria Hospital, we have to refute the statement now being circulated regarding the cause of her illness.
There is no truth whatever in the story in circulation.
We beg to give notice that such proceedings as the law allows will be taken against any person further repeating or publishing the slander.

I can't see a witness "Kathleen" on the marriage that Chris posted?

I wonder who the witness.... Lusie "Stevens" Miller is?

Louise Report 27 Nov 2015 12:00

and the plot thickens......
the other side of the family come from Dover Maisies husband.
continuing thanks to all
i have been looking for leads, the birth certificate states Edith Stevens formerly Blackman but with no marriage cert. there is nothing to go on.
Did you need ID in 1906 when registering a birth?
I too was looking for a death in1906c that might explain adoption but have come up with nothing.
the name Maisie is not particularly common and i thought it may have been passed on but can not find a Maisie Blackman or Maisie Stevens i have tried various combinations with Crowley but to no avail. neither Arthur on Edith or Maisie are names linked to any descendants Rebbecca Crowley is 1of 9 siblings all in portsea.
thanks again everyone

Prickly, Kathleen Vincent Miller was the Bride, Maisie's step sister.

PricklyHolly Report 27 Nov 2015 12:20

Yes I realise that Belle

You posted that you were wondering whether the second witness of the Marriage was in fact Maisie and has been mistranscribed as Kathleen. :-)

As far as I can see........the second witness is Lusie Stevens Miller.

Sorry, Prickly I should have put some punctuation in! I meant that I thought that Maisie had witnessed the Marriage and that her name had been mistranscribed as Luise so that it should have read Maisie Stevens Miller.

Louise, just out of a matter of interest who was the Informant on Maisie's Birth Certificate?

does anyone Know did you have to have ID in 1906 ?

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 27 Nov 2015 14:02

As you most probably know, you do now. Looking quickly I can't see anything on google to say either way as to what was required in 1906. You would have thought a marriage certificate would be required if Mother was registering it on her own but in a married name. If they were unmarried but both were to be on Certificate then both needed to attend the registration.

how do i track down military naval record for Charles Miller was wondering where he served and if he served with a Arthur Stevens

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 2 Dec 2015 19:02

It's possibly this record (Cost £3.50 to download):

Reference: ADM 188/103/94053
Description: Name Miller, Charles
Official Number: 94053
Place of Birth: Chatham, Kent
Date of Birth: 11 July 1859
Date: [1875-1876]
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
Legal status: Public Record

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6625044

It looks like his record runs to 1898- which fits with the 1901 census where he states retired:

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
21, Lester Road, Chatham, Medway, Kent, England

Charles Miller Head Married Male 41 1860 Chief Yeoman Of Signals R N (Retired) Chatham,
Sarah J Miller Wife Married Female 32 1869 - Woolwich, Kent, England
Vincent C E Miller Son - Male 3 1898 - Chatham, Kent, England

NOTE: Charles Miller is registered on the 1901 as Blind and on the 1911 he is registered as 'totally blind- 11 years'
