Eringobragh1916 Report 9 Nov 2015 15:13

The Registers for The Diocese of Kerry also cover the West of Cork and some go back to the 1700s and the Marriage and Baptisms for James Gilbert and Margaret Sullivan are there but its diffcult to make out where they were from....although they are pretty easy to read...its deciphering the townland the couple were from that often a problem...

Eringobragh I was going to suggest exactly that possibility and had a brain glitch and it went in and out of my head!

Excellent.

Sylann ... again ... if you get the 1840 marriage certificate you will know whether it was your Johanna or not by the father's name ... there really is not a way around this

where you got the 1841 census (don't know where it was) there could have been a ditto-type error made if Hector Munro McLean appeared before Johanna in the list and it was just assumed that the McLean was also the surname of the other Munros that followed; that is what I would imagine

in any case the 1815 marriage looks a little too close to be coincidence, as long as the source isn't someone's family tree for which there is no confirmation (don't know what 'come up on Ancestry' means)

http://tinyurl.com/p9q3rn8

that is a link to baptisms with father James Gilbert and mother Margaret Sullivan in Killarney, Kerry, 1817-1876: Mary Hannah John James, with ample room for a child born 1820

no Johanna in the list but that does not mean she was not their child

except her birth was stated as Cork ... but it may have been as they are not far distant, or she may have just mistaken where she grew up for where she was born, or the usual explanations for birthplace shifts ... those parish records might not be available at familysearch ...

here is the Gilbert+Sullivan marriage in any event

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGN5-4YN

there are a few James and John Gilberts in the English census but nothing that would peg any as related

Death of Johanna Walker

Joan Walker died 5 Feb 1887 Linlithgow
Widow of Richard Walker a shoemaker
father James Gilbert
mother Margaret Sullivan

But it doesn't say anything about her first marriage t would have been good if they had . I have seen on death certificates in Scotland datails of marriages and children

A marriage has come up on ancestry

1815 Killarney Kerry Ireland James Gilbert & Margaret Sullivan

I like the idea that the two Hectors are grandson of the older one in 1841
got it on ancestry and Freecen same people but names are spelt differently
This is why I thought the info I had was wrong in my 1841 census it had Johanna Munro Mclean ??

Thanks again for your help

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Nov 2015 16:02

agreed Potty - the older Hector is the father of Joanna's husband (John Munro?)

so Joanna's info is consistent throughout records, born 1820-21, and yes, Sylann should certainly have got that death record ... although it only names parents if they were known to the informant? and that long and far removed from her birth, perhaps they weren't ...

Potty

Potty Report 8 Nov 2015 15:06

Given Scottish naming patterns, I would guess that the two young Hectors in the 1841 are grandsons of the older Hector.

I can find Joanna up until 1871 where she is shown as Head of Household, so assume Richard had died.

This looks like her death:

The image on scotlandspeople should name her parents.

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Nov 2015 14:36

well we do now Sylann because we spent the time searching for what you know when you didn't tell us :-)

there are two Hectors in that 1841 household according to Ancestry, the infant Hector Munro and the older child Hector Munro McLean ... given Ancestry's abysmal transcriptions you would have to look at the original image at scotlandspeople to see what it really said for Johanna, but are the 1841 and 1851 censuses not almost necessarily the same people?

if you could give info about where Johanna or Johanna's other children are in the 61 71 81 91 ... censuses, someone might be able to take another look for Johanna with that info to help

we just do not know as much as you do!

also if you do not get the 1840 English marriage certificate you will not know whether that is your Johanna (by comparing father's name etc)

and of course that marriage certificate would give info about the first husband to use in tracing what became of him and whether he is related to the Munro household in Scotland in the 1841 census

Sorry for the delay baby sitting last night

Thank you for all your help The thing is you know as much as I do

Johanna marriage to Richard Walker was in 1848, Richard had been married before in 1843 don't know what happened to his wife possibly died in child birth, that is where Jean walker b 1843 comes in.
So I'm going off the 1851 Census That is where Hector Munro comes in b 1840 England,
I did see the 1841 census for Johanna but the one I saw had her name as Johanna Munro Maclean?? the one on here sounds better,

Richard Walker died in 1870 Johanna died in 1887, but after the 1851 census We can't find Hector Munro or Jean Walker, the only family I've got for Johanna is her father James

once again thank you for your help,

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Nov 2015 01:16

I know, or a Hector Munro/Monro+Tomlinson marriage in either country

still I suspect Sylann is not looking for the more recent details of Hector :-)

of course, if only we did know how she got back to and is related to Johanna Gilbert Munro Walker ...

gotcha on the edit

it would be a little odd to skip out and go to his family :-)

but to go live with them while he was in the military if she had no family locally would make sense

remember she remarried in 1848

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Nov 2015 00:44

there are a couple of John Munro's born in Scotland down in the Plymouth area in both 1841 and 1851, living in Army Barracks

but that's guessing, based on the possible marriage.

If true, it may mean that she skipped out on him :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Nov 2015 00:35

I wondered the same ... couldn't find any confirmed sighting between 1851 and then (there is one in Scotland in 1861, nephew of a May Munro, but the other names don't fit)

figured Sylann might know the course of Hector's career since he is the person she may know about

unfortunately looking for records of Joanna Gilbert before her marriage will likely be a Herculean task
