Son-in-law of Rutton Morris and Rachel (nee Butler):

http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/barnes_richard_7E.html

" . . . . . . his cousin and future wife, the daughter of Rachel Butler and Rutton Morris, a former minister of the Congregational Church in St John’s."

I'm sure I saw that Richard Barnes was also one of those to whom probate was granted after Rutton's death - but I can't find the record again - somewhere on Ancestry.

To all of you on this one and all the hard work, thank you very much. And to MarieCeleste, how on earth did you manage to get Google to spit that one out? I had tried various combinations of words in the search engine but nothing revealed such a wonderful detail about his service out there.

Now I just need to unravel the various bits of information which you've all unearthed and put them into sequence. I'm also transcribing the handwritten journal written by the Revd. Morris's wife's younger brother (my chap, if you see what I mean?) and it is an absolutely fascinating account of life in Jamaica way back then.

And I know it's a long shot, but I wonder whether there is any way where we/you may be able to trace 'Mrs. Morris's' descendants to the present day and offer them this treasured piece of history which in reality is their heritage. Any one by the name of Sherlock Holmes out there on this one???

OK, I've now pooled all your wonderful knowledge and made them up into a little history of DRM and his wife Jane.
Thank you for finding his death in 1899 on the Isle of Wight - he left a very small estate to poor widow Jane.
I have been trying hard to find her death, obviously after 1899, but am not succeeding.
PLEASE could you have a look for this for me? If it can be found, then I may be on the path to finding her descendants who might like a copy of this super account of their ancestor's life in Jamaica!
Here's hoping.
:-D

MarieCeleste Report 18 Oct 2015 14:00

Ancestry transcriptions are appalling now, they're always missing middle names out.

This is definitely her:

Name: Jane Morris
Probate Date: 20 Jun 1904
Registry: Chichester
Death Date: 31 May 1904
Death Place: Sussex, England

MORRIS, Jane Eliza of 8 Glebe Road, West Tarring, Sussex widow. Died 31 May 1904. Probate to Henry Bathurst Hanna, retired Colonel in HM Army. Effects £316 8s 11d

The death was easy to find on FreeBMD (East Preston is in Sussex)

Deaths Jun 1904
MORRIS Jane Eliza 72 E. Preston 2b 219

I can see no issue from the marriage so she wouldn't have any descendants.

Nicola'S Report 18 Oct 2015 14:22

MarieCeleste, you are officially brilliant!
Thank you so much for finding that. I guess you realise by now that Henry Bathurst Hanna is her brother and our relation by marriage. He was a Colonel in the Indian Army. We have these two fabulous handwritten accounts by him; one tells of a mounted charge in which he was very badly wounded and the other is of his sister's [Jane] life in Jamaica as the wife of the Rector of St. James, Montego Bay.
We have donated a transcript of the mounted charge to the British Library and it is stored with HBH's service record. It is extraordinary to read, and quite gory in places.
HBH was also a serious art collector while he was serving in India. The pictures and manuscripts were said to be among the finest in the world. In 1907/08 [we have the letters] HBH offered his collection to Charles Freer. Freer, in turn, made a gift to the nation of this collection upon his death and they are now at the Freer/ Sackler Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Along with a copy of the charge account, at their request!!
I have emailed a copy of the Jamaica document to St. James' Parish Church, Montego Bay, Jamaica for them to use in their archives as they wish.

Now then; since Jane's brother had probate of her estate, I am beginning to wonder whether Jane and David had any offspring? If they did, it would have been more usual that perhaps a son or daughter handled the estate ..... Is this the end of the line on this one, or can anyone see any children of the marriage, please?
:-D

ArgyllGran Report 18 Oct 2015 16:48

Presumably they married in Jamaica - not in England/Wales, anyway - so if they had children it may have also been in Jamaica.

There are a lot of Jamaican birth records on Ancestry for the right period - don't know if it's exhaustive or not - but none are children of David Rutton & Jane Eliza.
I agree with MC - no children.

Thank you ArgyllGran for coming back to me on this one.

I wonder, can anyone see their possible marriage in Jamaica, please? I agree that this was the probable marriage venue. Judging by his birth date, this would probably not have been before 1825.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 18 Oct 2015 19:29

Have looked for marriage for a while, but no joy.

As Jane Eliza wasn't born until 1834 I doubt the marriage would have been before 1850.

Oh yes, I had spotted the unusually big age gap between husband and wife before but forgot to compute it in for the marriage search. Apologies for that.

I've been trying all sorts of permutations on Family Search in a vain attempt to find the marriage. Her birth comes up loud and clear, but no marriage ..........

I was so hoping that there would be a very long shot to find descendants of this couple so that I could let them have a copy of their ancestors' Life in Jamaica.

Do we have to accept a dead end, do you think?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Oct 2015 20:35

Perhaps you could contact St James Parish Church again?
They might have old records?

Will do.

Died

On the 26th of November, in Kingston, Miss Mary Hannah Morris, the third daughter of the late Rev. Rutton Morris, formerly of St. John's, Newfoundland, and of St. Pierre-les-Calais. Aged 76 years.

Thank you for the snippet about Mary.
She would be the aunt of our Reverend David Rutton, i.e., his father's sister. His father was just 'Rutton' Morris, we have realised.
Just so wish that we could find the marriage of David Rutton and Jane Eliza - and also possible offspring, although that is looking very unlikely now.

Always a big thank you to one and al on this one. Isn't it annoying that we can find everything EXCEPT the marriage of Jane to David?? .........
My only purpose was to try to find descendants of this couple so that I could offer them a copy of their ancestor's life in Jamaica - if it was me, I would so want to see that!!
But alas, it seems that there were no children of the marriage and so the story ends there.
I have contacted the Jamaica archives to offer them a copy of the account and also St. James' Church in Montego Bay itself. Neither of them has responded - odd. But if any of you want to read the account of the mounted charge in India in which HBH was involved, we have donated a copy to the British Library, India and Asia collection. It should be with his Service Records, or nearby. It is an amazing thing to read.
I think that I shall unofficially close this thread; but if anyone suddenly finds either their marriage and/or offspring, please pm me.
Big thank you to one and all on this one.

A little postscript on this one:
The historical archives in Jamaica and also the Church of England [Lambeth Palace Library] have accepted a transcript of the 'Life in Jamaica' account with grateful thanks. Nice.
But still no word from St. James' church itself and so ArgyllGran's clever thought about contacting them re a possible marriage record would I guess be fruitless, as before. Such a shame.
As a last resort, I shall contact the CofE and see if they have any record of possible descendants from the marriage.
If so, I will put them on here.
:-)

Extraordinary stuff - how did you dig that one up??!! Yes, wonderful reading even though Rutton is the father of David Rutton who goes on to marry my relation's sister.
Does anyone know where the C of E records of their ordained folk are kept, please? As a last ditch, I could perhaps contact them re the marriage of their ordained David Rutton Morris and possible offspring. Surely, they will have definitive records .........??
As a postscript, the Jamaica archives did get back to me and they have accepted with grateful thanks my transcribed copy of the life and times while the Revd. Morris and his wife Jane lived there in mid 1880's.
