This is the baptism of William Henry born in 1874 (I think mother was probably Editha Harriet, although she is listed as just Harriett):
First name(s) William Henry Last name Macdowell Birth year 1874 Birth date 21 Feb 1874 Baptism year 1874 Baptism date 09 Apr 1874 Denomination Anglican Place Devonport, St Stephen Father's first name(s) William Henry Mother's first name(s) Harriett County Devon Country England ------------------------------------------------------
Fortunately that baptism gives us his birth date- this ties in with this US WW1 registration Card:
Name: William Henry McDowell County: Nassau State: New York Birth Date: 21 Feb 1874 Race: White Draft Board: 4 If not a citizen of the US state what nation: Great Britain Occupation: Flagman Place of employment: Earl Av, Lynbrook, Nassau Nearest relative: Lilian Maria McDowell of Nicholas Av, East Rockaway Dated: Sept 12th 1918

I suspect that William Henry born in 1874 was sent to Canada first as a home child.
It looks like his mother (Editha) died in 1881. May be his father died or could not look after all the children?
There is a William McDowell listed on the home children records but no age is given- but this could well be him: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=32322&
His sister Emily Ellen was definitely sent to Canada in 1889:

This is her baptism:

Chris :)
(not sure on anything here!, head getting fuzzier, lol, can only suggest some Certs. being obtained perhaps)
(and Joyce, the reason why you can't find others sharing Selena, they have her as Selina, there are a couple of Members!)
|
Joyce- that information was from the 1911 census- which tells us that Selena and William had two children, but one had died- Murial was the child still living.
HOWEVER, if your Father was Edmund McDowell, the son of Alfred Ernest McDowell, then Selena Leathlean and William H Mcdowell born 1865 are not your family.
|
So William Henry (Father of William Henry and Alfred Ernest) did remarry after Editha's death.
