trying to find what happened to James . I am unable to find a marriage or a death for him. the twins were born in Ellesmere Shropshire in 1898 , anyone any ideas ?

There is a note in the last column "imbecile at birth"

It is the County Lunatic Asylum, Winwick, Warrington, Lancs.

There are over 1200 patients in there, from babies to elderly

It's always worth remembering that people in asylums, hospitals, prisons, etc are quite often shown only by their initials

This appears to be Edith Mary in 1901. Maybe somebody with access could kindly look up the full transcript to give you other pointers to search forward:

Also worth considering that there are lots of possible spelling variants for the surname!
Darricutt, Dorricutt, Derricut, Darricott...........

no sign of James on those censuses, I did check before searching under his initials.

I also checked for mis=spellings.

No sign of him either on Public Family trees


which is why I tried the initials only route.

I would now suggest looking for a death much later to see if he turns up

Well on the 1911 census dad has said 7 children born all living and listed 7 children
which doesn't include a James !

well, they certainly appear together on the Index to GRO

it sounds awful, I know ........... but sometimes people back then put "damaged" babies into care and then paid no more attention to them.


but I can't find James anywhere else, I can't see a death for him on freebmd from 1911 to 1965

It may be worth contacting the Cheshire Archives as that is where Winwick records are kept. I see that a death can't be found as yet, but the records may hold a clue. There were some inmates who were buried in the grounds apparently. :-(

Just wondering if you have seen the 2 birth certs for the "twins"?

As the 1911 census gives 7 children born, none died and they are all accounted for... could Edith and James be cousins , registered on same day perhaps ?

I also wondered that ......... but, even so, we should still be able to find him either alive or dead.

Unless your theory is correct, and his forename was changed after registration but before baptism so he was no longer James .............. which does happen!

The Registrar is supposed to be informed when that happens so that an amendment can be made, but people rarely do it.

I think you need to see James birth cert to be sure of his parents.
If you have Edith's it should say if she is a twin
