Thankyou it's all coming together and fingers crossed the father named on George's birth certificate is either Andrew Henry or Henry Andrew I'm hoping that Andrew & Henry are the same person.

I have ordered George's birth certificate to hopefully answer the question of his father.

Mavis

Mavis Report 24 Jun 2015 09:39

Why would George's father be stated as Henry if it was Andrew ??

unless Andrew died or was on a trip when George was conceived by
Henry ???

or was father upgraded to look good on paper and perhaps he didn't exist at all

parish records need to be searched for answers or clues

This ties in nicely with the1851 census for Mary Heppel a married servant at 4 Stopford Place. Can't wait for the birth certificate to arrive with fathers name. I haven't been able to find more on Andrew Apple yet.
Thankyou

Hi, I have already ordered the certificate for George Apple and it will be interesting to see the parents names as I have found a marriage for Andrew Apple and Mary Bone. Stoke Dameral 1836.
I am tempted by the marriage certificate of Mary Apple and James McCarthy but will wait for the birth one to arrive. Once again thankyou.

Bear in mind George's Mum might not have been married to his Father. Father's names were often made up to save face and it might have been preferable to say married to an employer than single with child!

It might be worth risking the birth certificate for George Apple to see who are named as parents - is there a Father named on that and is the mother nee, formerly or widow.

And the marriage certificate of James McCarthy and Mary Apple would give the name of both bride and grooms Fathers and whether or not spinster/bachelor or widow/er and should include maiden and former names of the bride.

Hi Gins/Margee,

This is interesting as if George was a lodger in 1851 then could Mary Heppel servant in 1851 be his mother? I have looked at many weird and wonderful variations on Happel but not Keppel. Many many thanks. I think you may well be right.

Looking at it again, Gins, there is a possibilty that it's Hepple. Beside Jane McPhail's name it says "Husband at sea" That H looks very much like the first letter of George's surname.
