Hello, the simple way is to go on Birth search and enter fathers surname only, then in the space for optional words enter mothers maiden name. That will give you a base to work from.
Hope this helps.

Frances,
Just to reiterate, don't ever click on buy for certificates on genealogy sites - Ancestry charge £22+ - GRO £9.25
Rose has given you the link, you will need to register and create an account.
Do read the threads, as Jacqueline has advised, as they are very useful. We are all enthusiastic amateurs who like to share our "acquired expertise" and access...and we all compete and applaud at the same time, if that makes sense!
Reading the threads will help us to help you :-)
Good luck on your new journey - remember we are all here and will help when we can

No-one can access your tree unless you have PM contact, and give permission
You might find it useful to read the threads at the top of the boards which give tips and advice
For a newcomer to this fascinating hobby, it's a good idea to do so

Frances, in that useful post of mgnv's, one point I would highlight is NEVER to order a certificate via Ancestry or other sites which charge more than the GRO's cost of £9.25

FreeBMD aims to transcribe the printed GRO index which finished in 1983 - it was computerized thereafter. The project is ongoing - here's some status: Incomplete quarters thru 1959 as of 15/04/15 Births Sep 1940 (64%) ************** Births Dec 1943 (78%) ************** ------------------------------------------- Marriages Dec 1952 (70%) ******************* A quarter of the Bs & Ms are incomplete in the 1960s, and there are no essentially complete quarters for anything post-1975q1. The database is updated abt every 4w, with usually a couple more essentially completed quarters for some event.
One can buy BMD certs thru the GRO, or thru the local office that now holds the original rego books for Bs & Ds (& rego office Ms or non-conformist marrs that the registrar attended - they hold a copy of the remaining marrs conducted in their district - the GRO only has transcriptions of the local office rego's). One can also buy m.certs from the church if they're in the current rego - old rego's are deposited in some archive - usually the county records office. These deposited records may be online, along with baptismal and burial registers - most of the Greater London archive is online with Ancestry (and Westminster is with FMP/GR).
I suppose your birth falls into one of the untranscribed holes in FreeBMD. Anyone can search on Ancestry for free - however, without a sub, you're limited in what details you can see. You can search for births post-1915 via: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8782 Although you're normally limited in what you can see, Ancestry will also place an order for your b.cert with the GRO (it will more than double the cost to you, however). If you click on the shopping basket, you can see the details of order they will place - details like rego district, quarter of registration, vol & page #s - after noting these, you can (& should) back out.
In the preceeding post, PricklyHolly posted an 1851 census for George and Ellen Hopkins, along with a cherry-picked FreeBMD marr hit. But how do we know she picked corretly - might there be another 10p piece in the Xmas pudd. [Yes, I know I'm mixing metaphors, and I'm not sure whether the 10p piece is appropriate - in my day, it was silver thrupny bits (experience that's hardly relevant).] Anyways, clicking on the page # brings up the whole set whose index entry points to p 485, incl Eleanor Goodwin - might she be our Ellen?
Marriages Sep 1846 (>99%) Baker Thomas N Aylesford 5 485 Burridge Eliza Augusta N Aylesford 5 485 Davies Thomas N Aylesford 5 485 Ford Ellen N Aylesford 5 485 Goodwin Eleanor N Aylesford 5 485 Hopkins George N Aylesford 5 485 Sheppard Frederick Charles N Aylesford 5 485 Turner Mary Ann N Aylesford 5 485
Some local rego offices have the local BMD indexes at least partly online - see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd Of interest here is Kent Registration Services: http://webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.ROIS.Web.Sites.Public/Pages/Default.aspx (Please note: Kent does not include the Medway Towns (Chatham, Gillingham, Rochester and Strood) or the London Boroughs of Bromley and Greenwich who hold their own records for births, deaths and marriages going back to 1 July 1837).
If we look up the marrs for our Geo & for Ellen Ford, we get:
Name HOPKINS, George Year Of Marriage 1846 Entry Number 426 Register C33/1
Name FORD, Ellen Year Of Marriage 1846 Entry Number 426 Register C33/1
Not the most convenient site, but note they have the same Entry #, so they're both on the same m.cert, and PH's guess was right. Here's the other couples:
Name SHEPPARD, Frederick, C Entry Number 427 Name BURRIDGE, Eliza, A Entry Number 427
Name BAKER, Thomas Entry Number 428 Name GOODWIN, Eleanor Entry Number 428
Name DAVIES, Thomas Entry Number 429 Name TURNER, Mary, A Entry Number 429
The Kent site unfortunately doesn't say what church is coded by C33 - C prefixes usually indicate C of E churches - pre 1899, there's not a deal of choice - only CofE, jews, quakers and the registrar were authorized to keep official marr rego's. The /1 indicates it's the church's first rego which will probably fill up in 1847

Your all so organised, maybe that'll be me one day :-S I definitely need to excess to some of the census but all the ones I go to are asking for credits, I think I need to spend a couple of weeks in the library instead. Its just that I'm more interested in what the people did for a living etc

Re pros and cons of various sites...
I have standard membership on here - just so I can chat to you guys on the forums :-)
I have Ancestry Worldwide
I have FMP Britain...courtesy of my Times memberships at the mo - have to decide in July whether to speculate £99...
I find FMP really good for Glamorgan and Monmouthshire BMD and newspapers.
And I find Ancestry really good for Birmingham, Warwickshire London and Yorkshire...
So it depends what you are looking for. And really, if someone asks nicely enough and says thank you afterwards, we'll all look something up for you :-D :-D :-D
