just wanted to say a big thank you for your assistance with finding the birth details of my G Grandmother Hannah Tomlinson. Particular thanks to Jacqueline who suggested Annie Shone born 1877 may be worth looking into.
After 5 years of searching the birth cert arrived this morning and she was right!!!! The correct mothers name given and no father named so we now know the mystery.

Thank you so much for your advice and assistance my sincere apologies for the long delay in my reply I haven’t had chance to reply until now. Much of what you have researched and provided matches my research. Although there are a couple of suggestions I still have to look into. Here’s what I know so far about my G Grandmother Hannah Bell (nee Tomlinson). Hannah told her family her maiden name was Tomlinson (as per her wedding cert) and that she was born in Barrow in Furness before spending her adult life in Workington Cumbria. Records show she married: Isaac Bell (Steel Rail-Road Worker) in June 1899 Cockermouth Parish (Workington) – the certificate does not show age however states her father was William Tomlinson.
Hannah Tomlinson & Isaac Bell’s children were : Bertha b. 1896 / Charlotte b 1900 / William b. 1902 Doris b. 1905 / Barbara b.1908 Walter ? b. 1918 / Arthur b.1910. Her Death record states: Hannah Bell Birth 5 Dec 1876 - Death Sep 1972 Cockermouth Parish (Workington). Census Records: I can find no census records for Hannah Tomlinson until married as Bell in 1901.
All research suggests her mother was Charlotte Shone who married William Tomlinson June 1878 in Barrow In Furness. Both disappear of the Census Records after this until 1901 by which time William has died (Workington Feb 1885). Charlotte is working as a housekeeper in Workington (Hannah lives as Hannah Bell in same town). A key clue to recognising that Charlotte Shone is Hannah Tomlinson’s mother (aside from her marrying William in Barrow in Furness) is that Hannah had a younger brother who was deaf and dumb from birth. Charlotte married the man to whom she was housekeeper in 1901 prior to which she had a son (born d&d) carrying both their names.
To date it’s all anecdotal. I suspect the information I have is correct however to date I can find no birth record for Hannah (as Tomlinson or Shone) nor any census records of Hannah, William or Charlotte Tomlinson from Hannah’s birth in 1876. Bizarrely Charlotte & William’s wedding cert states his father as Mark Tomlinson (I have found no record of any William Tomlinson born to or living as child to a Mark Tomlinson.
I hope the above makes sense. It’s an ongoing puzzle. I’ll keep chasing up your suggestions, you help is much appreciated.

There is no sign of Hannah on any census prior to her marriage

No births on Cumbria BMD for Tomlinson with MMN Shone....however, as that only covers Barrow at the moment, it may not be significant

Do you have the 1899 marriage cert?

If not, where did you get the name for Hannah's father?

There is no record of her birth on Cumbria BMD.

Of course, as she was born before the marriage, she could have been born virtually anywhere...if the mother was 'sent away', as often happened
