Peter married again in 1852.
Seek Jane's dob and dod, also parents' names.

Edit: The census that Susan posted is 1861 and has his wife as Jane. If Peter married again in 1851, was his second wife also called Jane?

Shirlingre must be Stirlingshire.

If Jane died in Scotland, her death registration will name both parents if the informant knew the details.

Just notice that you say that Peter remarried in 1852. Do you think that Jane died before then?

Would that apply pre-civil registration, which didn't come into force in Scotland until 1855?

I am now very confused as friend and I have been going over information and have found a Jane Bruce christened 12 Jul 1819, Rathven, Banff, Scotland, her
parents James Bruce and Margaret Hay??????Yes I think Peter was a widower
when he married again 13 May 1852 Susan Machattie, Banff, Scotland. I
thought child Mary may have been born to Jane and Peter??

If PETER married SUSAN in 1852, that can't possibly be the right family in 1861.
