I have looked for Alice Mawdsley's before her marriage on census records.

I think I may have found her. On her marriage certificate she gives her father as William Mawdsley, an Innkeeper. I think she actually gave her Uncle's first name and Stepfather's surname.

I think William was brought up as a Whitehead although his birth is registered as Mawdsley. Perhaps his nose was a little out of joint when his father re-married or perhaps he just felt that he was obliged to have his recorded birth surname on the birth registrations of his children .
