A tree on Ancestry has William's father as Thomas Whitehed and his mother as Alice Mawdsley. |

Wonder if this is the family? Perhaps either Thomas or Alice wasn't free to marry. |

1861, Thomas is lodging with the Metcalfs wh were marriage witnesses. As Margaret has the same birthplace as Thomas, they may be brother and sister. |

Thanks so much for all this information, I'm really going to have to sit down and try to sort this out, there's so much to digest. If I send for the birth certificate for William do you think he would be a Mawdsley or a Whitehead? There are two birth refs in 1865, one of each. You are all so good at this stuff. |

Thanks ... I guess the next step is to send for the certificate and fingers crossed it's the right one. |

Yvonne, I can't help wondering if there are two different Alices involved with Thomas. The census records indicate a birth year of around 1850 for Alice but looking at the age of daughter Emma she couldn't be her Mum. Also that 1911 census stating married 30 years and 3 children born. I wonder if Alice nee Mawdsley died and Thomas re-married to another Alice? |

Thanks so much for all your hard work - it always amazes me how you find all this stuff. |

This is only my opinion and perhaps some of the others helpers would disagree. If that index from LancashireBMD is your William(and I'm pretty sure it is), the only additional information you'll get from it is where he was born and his exact DOB. His Mum's death certificate will give you the cause of her death and exact date of death. |
