Thanks Gritty for the photo & newspaper info. Interesting to read & to see. :-)

Yes it is the same John Quinton, A photo would be lovely thanks. Mary Eliza Quinton remarried in 1946 to John Henry Martin & remarried again in 1964 to William Charles Oliver. My guess is her mother Mary Jane Lee died somewhere between 1939 & 1946

Gritty Report 26 Nov 2014 10:08

Her son John was still living there in 1940: If this is correct family I can send you the article- there is a picture too.

Portsmouth Evening News - Monday 23 September 1940

STAMSHAW WEDDING OF CUBMASTER

Two well known local families were united at the church of St. John the Baptist, Stamshaw on Saturday by the marriage of Mr William E F Quinton eldest son of Mr & Mrs John E K Quinton of Balfour Road, North End, to Miss Joan M Hinks, only daughter of Mr William R Hinks and the late Mrs Hinks of Knowsley Road, Cosham.

The Bridegroom is on the engineering staff of Portsmouth Passenger Transport and for 21 years has been a prominent member of the scout movement, being an assistant district commissioner (cub section)......

Thanks Jan, I think I checked Mary Anne Lee before but I may have missed something so will check it again.

Not quite sure what to suggest. As you are probably aware, there are just 2 Mary Lee deaths with a matching age in Hampshire (I know the one has the wrong middle initial but stranger things have happened!).

Name: Mary J Lee
Birth: abt 1865
Death: Sep 1946 - Andover, Hampshire, England

Name: Mary A Lee
Birth: abt 1865
Death: Jun 1943 - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

There is also a burial for a May Jane Lee in Dorking, no idea if that area rings a bell at all.

Name: Mary Jane Lee
Birth Year: abt 1866
Burial Age: 81
Burial Date: 28 May 1947
Archive Provided Parish: Woking, St John
Parish as it Appears: Woking, St John the Baptist
Reference Number: WOKJ/4/7

Presumably this one:

Name: Mary J Lee
Birth: abt 1865
Death: Jun 1947 - Surrey North Western, Surrey, England

Thanks brummiejan - I know where Mary Eliza Quinton was buried in Portsmouth & have checked everything out but Mary Jane Lee is not there. It's a dead end but thanks for your help anyway. I do have a lead in Bedwelty Deaths of a Mary Jane but it doesn't say if she was born 1865 or died 1865. I need to checked census 1871 to see if there was a 6 yr old living in Bedweltyas a child under the birth name of Lee. or if it was a birth date it may mean she was there during ww2 under a married name of Lee.

Do you have any idea what happened to Eliza? As Mary was born about 1865, presumably Eliza was born about the turn of the century and therefore has passed away also. It might help if you can locate her death,it will give a clue as to location at least, especially if she died in Portsmouth, as if that is the case chances are Mary was still there till she died.
It's an easier name to search for too!

I'ts been checked & there's nothing for her after 1939. Unless her daughter Mary eliza Quinton & jophn Quinton moved & didn't register Mary J lee on ER.

You might as well check the electoral roll for that address after the war, on case she was still there.

Gwyn in Kent Report 24 Nov 2014 20:43

What record do you have for her being in Balfour Road in 1939?
Is it an electoral list?

Was she with family?

Sheil Report 24 Nov 2014 20:30

Remarriage is a possibility but she would have been getting on a bit in the 1940's

Sheil

Sheil Report 24 Nov 2014 20:28

I have but D.O.B didn't quite match

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 24 Nov 2014 20:26

Wales was much safer at that time.
Have you looked for a death in that area.?

Gwyn

Sheil

Sheil Report 24 Nov 2014 20:22

She had family in Portsmouth & Bedwelty area

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 24 Nov 2014 20:19

Do you know why she moved to Portsmouth after her husband died?
Was it to be near family?

Was there perhaps a married daughter ( or son) living elsewhere in the country who Mary might have gone to live with, when the bombing got too much in Portsmouth.
It was a prime target in wartime.

Could she have remarried?
