Charles Checkley who married Eliza Grubb was my Great Grandfather, my Grandmother was born as Marion Checkley in 1887 who married Oliver Parker Holmes in Dec 1925, my father was Brian Holmes born 1927 died in 2011. Grandmother died in 1977.
Charles Checkley had Three sons Francis Henry born in 1879, Walter Arthur 1883 - 1941, and Herbert 1885 - 1939, Walter & Herbert never married and both lived with my Grandmother until their deaths, both were soldiers.
Charles was a soldier and moved around the country including Ireland where one of his children was born, he settled in Leeds and was at Carlton Barracks where he retired and all his children made their lives. I have a clock which was presented to him on his retirement as Colour Sargent which has been passed down the family
Charles according to records had a son called Charles Frederick who was baptised on 21st January 1876, but have not found any details about, and my Grandmother never mentioned him.
Eliza Checkley (Grubb) lived to the early 1950s, but had died before I was born in 1954.
John Holmes

Frances, if you're sure that Eliza Grubb is the correct spouse then the army records mention her. I have no doubt that the man in the army records (which were from FindMyPast) is the same man as in the 1841 & 1851 census posted.

You have had all the available info about Charles and Job and Eleanor on several occasions.
You may just need to accept it for what it is, and understand that he lied about his age in later years, as was suggested much earlier on in this thread

Of course it's me not understanding what I am looking at and I have now seen the 'Attestation' info. How he can be 16 and 20 at the same time is probably ' Family Knowledge' being a bit astray. May be, while in the army he had a bump on the head that made him 2 years younger for the rest of his life?

Sorry Marie Celeste but we seem to be back on the old track of the Charles born 1838 not 1841-43. My biggest worry now is that his mother was not actually married to a Job at the time of Charles birth and that she was too ashamed (or a heathen) to get him christened. The family story is that Charles was had up for a crime when he was 16 and given the choice of prison or the army and all later info on him shows he joined the army:-
First name Charles Last name Checkley Service number 1110 Rank Private Unit or Regiment 1st Btn 22nd Foot (Cheshire) Depot Regiment stationed at Parkhurst Year 1861 National Archives reference WO12 / 3923 Category Military, armed forces & conflict Record collection Regimental & service records Collections from Great Britain
Is there a site that would detail his signing up c.1858?
