I am having trouble finding any information on Henry Sheldon Scott prior to his marriage (to Janet Fisher Hogg at Prestonpans, Scotland in 1899) or for the early 1900s. I found two Henry S Scotts in the 1901 census, but neither are married to the right wife! He would have been born around 1873 or 74 (he died July 1954 aged 80). I don't have much information on his early life, but by 1899 he was a nonconformist minister of religion. Any ideas for tracking him down? |

If he married in Scotland, his marriage certificate will name his parents. |

There is a probate record for him, not sure if you have this? |

Thanks for all your help. This certainly looks like them. The probate is definitely him. I don't have the marriage certificate, only the birth certificate for their son, which gives the marriage details. Trying to limit the number of certificates I order, as it works out expensive but I might have to splash out on a few more! |

Philippa, if you spend £7.00 on 30 credits for Scotlandspeople that should be enough to get you 5 certificates. You use 1 credit to view search results and 5 to view / download the register entry. |

Wow, £7 for 5 Is cheap, is that all? I was going by the cost of English ones, which are nearly £10 each! |

Have found his birth and marriage details, although I can't find him in the Scotland census for 1911 either - wondering if he went to Ireland for a bit? Or maybe if the family were travelling and camped out overnight? One thing that puzzles me though - found the record for Henry & Janet's marriage and his mother is listed as Sophia Shepherd, but on the birth record, it is Mary Shepherd. Both his parents were dead at the time of his marriage, so I wondered if maybe he couldn't remember his mother's name and had to guess? |

Hmm...think I've worked out where there was so much vagueness about Janet's DOB - according to the record, her parents were married in the same month that she was born. |

On the 1881 census his Mum is Mary S. Scott so perhaps her middle name is Sophia and that's what she was known by. |
