Member Since: December 2006 Posts: 64 Send Message	Trying to get help on my Gt, Gt Granddad who was born in Caltha Galway about 1780. In 1806 he joined the 13th Regiment of Foot, in 1821 i have viewed a document that says he was admitted to the Royal Chelsea Hospital and gives his residence as Roscommon, he emigrated with his wife and family to Manchester England about 1840, his death certificate states that he died of natural decay at his home, 29 Royton St, Deansgate, Manchester with his wife Jane Present on 6th March 1862. my questions are as follows, Who were Lukes Parents, surely they should have been on his enrolment papers as next of kin ? His wife Jane was born in Scotland about 1791, but what was her maiden name? and did they marry in Scotland ? i know that that was one of the places the regiment was garrisoned. what were his injuries or wounds that he was admitted to Chelsea Hospital ? i know they did not terminate his army career because he was discharged in 1826 after 20 years and 5 months service.

	Do you know when his first child was born? That would give some indication of when he married. Also, what religion was he?

	Not find any marriages for a Luke Jennings on Scotlandspeople. He may not have been injured - he is listed on the census as a Chelsea Pensioner. 1851 England Census Luke Jennings Age:63 Estimated Birth Year:abt 1788 Relation:Head Spouse's Name:Jane Jennings Gender:Male Where born:Ireland Civil Parish:Manchester Ecclesiastical parish:St John Town:Manchester Luke Jennings 63 Jane Jennings 58 James Jennings 17 William Jennings 14 Jane Jennings 12 All except Jane born Ireland. Have you noticed that in 1861, he is living in the same house as a Thomas Jennings,33, b Ireland. Was Thomas his son?

	Looks as if Thomas was his son. There is a marriage for him to Margaret Cooney in Manchester Cathedral in 1849 - father Luke, pensioner. So, it looks as if the family were probably not Catholic.

Member Since: December 2006 Posts: 64 Send Message	Trying to respond to all of you, Many thanks, first of all it is amazing how many official documents are incorrect, Jacqueline your post says he was born 1787 but he was born 1780/1781, it says he was 39 when he was discharged but he was in fact 46. Astra your post says he enlisted 2nd Oct 1809, he actually enlisted in 1806, in 1809 he was already fighting in the West Indies, he took part in two succesful battles against the French at Martinique and Guadaloupe for which he was awarded the General Service Medal with two bars. Potty: yes my Gt Gt Granddad ended his days a Chelsea Pensioner, but my question is: Why was he admitted to the Royal Chelsea Hospital in 1821 whilst still a serving soldier ? something must have been wrong with him ! you are right Potty, Thomas was his son, he was my Gt Granddad and was born in 1828 after Luke left the army.

Member Since: December 2006 Posts: 64 Send Message	Alviegal, you post is very interesting, you say his discharge papers say he had two children, does it name them ?i he was discharged in 1826, two years before his eldest Son Thomas was in 1828, Thomas was my Great Granddad and Thomas's son Luke Born in 1861 is my Granddad, you mention his future residence was going to be Castletown, is this in Ireland ? because it could be where the children were born. regards

	He was with the Veterans from 1821 until his discharge Are you fully au fait with the function of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea? To find out where Castletown is....you could try googling My post was the FMP transcription of the handwritten document on that site

	The only Caltha I can find seems to be a Lough, also know as Loch Callow; there is more than one Castletown, one in each of the following counties: Cork, Laois, Limerick, Wexford and Tyrone.
