Hi firstly "wow" i am blown away by so much information so quickly. Big thanks to Ann, Flip, Prickly Holly, Maddie and Gritty.

As i am finding it gets even more confusing the more you find out. It will take me time to work through all of this information but iam curious as to how you can know that the "aliases" used refer to the same man and where do you find the "full conviction list"
i will keep looking and hope maybe to hear more espec ially about his father James. There seems to be so many deceptions in this mans life i am beginning to doubt even that James was his father and that his birth was in India.

Flip i also have a strong feeling that there is a gypsy ancestry in here somewhere.

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 17:43

Nice find Gritty, but it says "of Bristol" so living there but not necssarily born there. I really do wonder if there was a Gypsy ancestry, although not trying to typecast I wonder?

According to Google, Punyant is in Lahore,Punjab.

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 14:32

Another twist, the 1893 conviction for house breaking, when he got 16 mth as James Gardner (now a carpenter) - the other offender charged with him (also got 16 months) was Rose Vincent. She had previous convictions in 1886 & 1887 under the name Margaret Bishop!

Flip

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 14:25

Going back to the earliest conviction, I think it was at Sevenoaks and he received 12 months for stealing a horse, cart & harness. He was a hawker, and also charged with the same offence was Rose Ranger (indicted as Grainger) who was also given 12 months.

It lists a previous conviction for Charles Davis in 18/1/1882 at Bedminster petty sessions where he was fined 20s for cruelty to a horse.

Another brick wall :-( :-( :-( :-(

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 5 Oct 2014 14:08

Yes one wonders whether it was indeed his real name.......

Jude

Flip

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 13:53

This does cast some doubts as to his real name and place of birth, and whether he invented the father James. What would a jeweller be doing in India - he obviously wasn't military otherwise the birth would be coming up on FMP.

If the first recorded offence is him, then I wonder if that was his original name??

Flip

Flip Report 5 Oct 2014 13:46

Not sure I agree with you Jude, if you look at the 1902 conviction he is a bricklayer - and the details tally with the full conviction list in 1907.

22/10/1891 given 12m for horse stealing, under the name Charles Davis
4/4/1893 given 16m for house breaking under name James Gardner
7/1/1897 5 yr + 2 yr police supervision for horse stealing (using Christopher Faithful)
3/7/1902 3 yr + 2 yr police supervision for horse stealing (Croydon court)
10/7/02 5 yr, concurrent with above (Maidstone assizes).
23/11/1907 7 yr + 3 yr supervision. (Now a carman)

Added: Although I agree, where did he find the time to marry & have kids :-D

If the horse stealer is him, Lord knows where he found time to marry and have a child lol! :-)

THat's why I asked about the occupation....I don't think the 1907 one is him. He is a serial horsestealer under various names and psuedonyms. And he appears to have been in prison from about 1893 whic
