I feel I might be over staying my welcome so to speak Ann, but this is great news about John and Hester, if it is possible to establish John's father, which you may have already done or John's son, which I have as Samuel Trotman 1743-1787 who married Mary Ward b.1735-1790. I had this info on my GR tree but as I said they wiped my tree and could not retrieve it. As Luck would have I still the scraps of paper with some notes on including this name.

Civil War

Marshfield was a casualty of the Battle of Lansdown (July 1643) during the Civil War. A Royalist army under Price Maurice and Sir Bevil Grenville were hoping to link up with Charles I at Oxford and avoid a confrontation with the Parliamentary Forces gathered at Bath under Sir William Waller. Marshfield, which had about 300 houses at that time, on 4 July was used as an overnight billet and provision store for the King's army of 6000. Next day the royalists were tempted into an abortive Battle at Lansdown, each side withdrawing with heavy losses. Sir Bevil Grenville (whose monument now stands on the site of the battle) died in Cold Ashton rectory and as the Royalists fell back on Marshfield for repairs almost every house had wounded men on its hands. When the depleted army moved on the reinforced Cromwellian army soon followed. There was little time to stow away the church's simple treasures before the invading despoilers were at work. As a piece of local doggerel composed 200 years later had it "The empty niche above the door, where Mary's image stood, And ravaged reredos testify to their revengeful mood."

It is not known just what damage may have been done as a result of the Civil War. Canon Trotman, a prominent authority in Marshfield's more recent past, speculated publicly about the likely missing treasures. He noticed the large stones on either side of the east window, with rough infilling under them. The large stones evidently formed canopies for figures now missing and which have been the marble figures found in 1866 during alterations at the Angel Inn (now 42 high Street) and later removed from the parish. Two or three other figures probably completed the statuary. Canon Trotman further presumed that the figure of the Virgin may have been taken from its niche in the porch by the Parliamentary troops, but adds forcefully, "Even they could scarcely have done more havoc with the church than the hand of the so-called restorer in 1860 who, while substituting the pitch pine seats...for the old carefully locked pews and capacious gallery, effaced at the same time much that should have been interesting to us today." Canon Trotman was speaking in 1906.

Biography



Owner of Bulkeleys and Carmichaels estates in Barbados, the compensation for which was awarded to his widow Ann Trotman née Hamilton and his two sons Joseph Trotman and Simon Lee Trotman (all q.v.). Also owner of Valley plantation, inherited from his father Henry Trotman.

Eldest son of Henry Trotman (c. 1736-1804) of Valley and Hill plantations, Barbados, and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1790). Colonel in St. George's Regiment of Militia in 1804, Member of the House of Assembly 1795/6 and 1815/16. Mentioned in the wills of his paternal grandfather, William Trotman of Ridge plantation in 1756 and his paternal aunt Ann Trotman in 1775.

23 and 24 April 1805 (1) Henrietta Steorgin of Henly, Suffolk, widow (2) Simon Lee of Lyme, Dorset (3) Thomas Clarke Trotman of Island of Barbados, West Indies, esq. Lease and release of plantation called Bulkeley's, Barbados, for use of (1) for term of 2000 years then to the use of (3) for ever Consideration: Further instalment of £20000 purchase money plus interest as per articles of agreement.

Thomas Clarke Trotman married Ann Hamilton in St Michael, Barbados, 16/10/1794.

Eight children were born to this couple between 1790 and 1814: (i) Henry born c. 1790, matriculated Queen's College, Oxford, 16/12/1812 age 22. (ii) Mary Hamilton, married William Drake Sealy (q.v.) (iii) Ann (c. 1798-1887). (iv) Simon Lee (c.1802-1862). (v) Joseph (1804-1868). (vi) Thomas Trotman. (vii) William Clarke Trotman (1811-1893). (viii) Philip Phipps, born 17/09/1814 and baptised 26/10/1814 in Clifton, Gloucestshire.

Memorial inscription at Clifton Church, Bristol, west wall of the nave: “Sacred to the memory of Thomas Clark Trotman Esqr of the Island of Barbadoes who departed this life May the 7th 1826, aged 58 years. (Erected by his Widow.) Also of Ann Trotman widow of the above who departed this life Jany 24th 1874 aged 98 years. Also of Ann Trotman, their daughter, who died Augst 28th 1887, aged 89."
