Mary Poole and Henry Tolson and Margaret Tolson are all held at York, Borthwick.

Hi again - I really need to order this document ... the one for John Poole in 1808 is held at Preston Record Office but I can't find this one anywhere?

Does anyone know?

Hi there, just in case any one is interested or has had the difficulty in working back over on this line, the ancestry I CURRENTLY think is:

Mary Poole (1790-1869)
Henry Poole (1767-1819)
Mary Tolson (1732-1817 date of will)
Henry Tolson (1712-1767)
Henry Tolson (1680-1761)
Henry Tolson (1645-1725)
William Tolson (1610-1670)
Henry Tolson (possibly died 1623)

Note there is ANOTHER Henry ToWlson baptised in 1678, son of Simon.

I suspect he Henry Tolson (1678-1757), but more work is needed.

Little bit of a side line but found John Poole, a medical practitioner living in Liverpool in the mid 19th Century and in 1861 is described as 'General Pracitiioner Licentiate of Apocatheries Hall'.

He died in Hampshre in 1882.

He was born 1802 in Egremont and I think must be my relative, grandson of John Poole d 1808 in Egremont, through his son William.

Was John a doctor?

Could we find out more about his career?

Thanks Flip - I never knew that! So it appears that John Poole's will is held in Lancashire and his widow, of the same place, is held in York! Better get some trains booked!

It depends what you are looking for - Cumbria archives would only have copies of wills, deposited as part of estate papers by local solicitors or major land owners. They would not have proved wills as there were no courts doing this in the old counties back then. The proved wills are held by the prerogative court, and can be in a number of depositories.

You also have to remember Cumbria only came into existence in 1974. It was formed from Cumberland, Westmorland, Carlisle City (of later years), part of Lancashire and part of Yorkshire! What a manky lot we are, and as a great deal of my ancestry is from these areas I've had to trawl many archives in the past.

Wow so they will be at the Borthwick Archives in York?

It IS NOT held at Cumbria Archives.

Would that also be the same for John Poole, Egremont in 1808?

Not sure why these Cumbrian Archives are festooned about the place. Can someone explain why this is?

Executor was Henry Cooke of Little Mill

(Executor possibly the husband of Elizabeth Cooke (nee Poole)- the niece mentioned in H Tolson's will?)

So the line goes:

Mary Poole(y)/Tennant (1790-1869)
Henry Poole(y) (1767-1819)
Mary Tolson (1732-1817) - need to order Will
Henry Tolson (1712-1767) - need to order Will but not sure he made one when you compare to Bridekirk burials (lots of entries).

I am also curious to work out who is the mother of Mary Tolson (1732-1817). I don't think it can be Ann Simpson, who is mentioned on the headstone as she and Henry Tolson didn't marry until 1737!

That's a bit of luck - Mary was still living on Water street in 1841.

So Mary Poole/Tennant was the great-neice of Henry Tolson of Bridekirk and the great granddaughter of Henry & Ann Tolson's father Henry Snr.

So this is Mary Graves who we have the marriage bond for in 1790 to Henry Poole in Cockermouth, so to me that confirms the connection to Joseph Poole in the 1845 administration claim. Mary Tennant is also my ancestor born Mary Poole (1790-1869), and this seems to tie them all togehter although Henry has been promoted from Labourer to Innkeeper!

Still trying to figure out the Bridekirk Tolson's now - obviously some connection but WHAT?!

Flip, yeah I agree! Very rich and wealthy. I can only dream of ever being any close that rich, and that is from the Henry Tolson (1745-1807) will. Which home are you talking about though?

Not easy, there appear to be a lot of Tolson's in that register! And to say they were a lower social standing - I wouldn't mind having their money/house & other properties. Have you googled their home - it's beautiful!

No, I know about the Lamplughs. That is why I am so intrigued by it.

BUT, some Tolson descendants (from the Tolsons of Woodhall) are suggesting that the Papcastle Tolsons were of a lower social standing and might not be related at all. I am not trying to sound pepimistic but I've been wading through the Bridekirk registers and I am not sure if I will be able to sort them out!

In case you don't know Lamplugh is another ancestral family in Cumberland! Just google it.

Or are they being baptised in their own right?
