Barrie,

Yes the births could go in the fathers surname,,,

1,If he was present at the time of registration and signed a declaration to the fact,,,,,but then proof wasnt needed for marriage so Jessie could just go along as a married woman.......but if they both were present and it was known they wasnt married it usually was stated,--nee instead of formally,,,,,,,,formally applies to the parents being married.

Just received Birth Certificate for Edna Alice May Tanenberg - its spelt Tenenberg all the way through it so am not sure if this really is correct - My mum was born on 11th October 1903 and so is this one. Anyway the rest of the information is Mother - Jessie Tenenberg formerly MAGGS. living at 26 Gladstone Avenue, East Ham, Essex. Father - wait for it - Edward Tenenberg, Waterproof maker(journeyman). Well, now I am baffled completely. Many thanks again for all your hard work on my behalf - I really do appreciate it as I have been confused since my aunts disclosure in 2002 about the name change. I do not have access to a computer which is why my friend, Diana is helping me. It certainly is a real puzzle.

Would it have been correct for Jessie Maggs to use the surname Tanenberg for her 2 daughters birth certificates when she and Baron did not marry until 1907?

My Aunt was a Tiller Girl (and my mother to before her marriage to John Clintonin 1924) and I rather think the address in Warwick Road, Blackpool was used as lodgings for theatrical people - although I could be wrong. Thanks again Barrie

In 1911 Ethel states British born in Marylebone not Canada,so maybe Ethel and Baron were never married as implied earlier.

Thank you to you all for your wonderful information. I think I can clarify things a little - The family seem to remember Edward being married twice - once to a Canadian, whom I am assuming may be Ethel and his second marriage was to a Barbara whom Auntie Freda said was from Brooklyn, and she lived with Edward in Birmingham - I wonder if this is the wife he was living with at the Globe Hotel? Family gossip has it that she was on the "game" and quickly returned to the USA.

From all this information I cant help wondering if the only connection between Baron and Edward is the Flim Industry? Is it conceivable that Ethel took Edna and Freda into her home after the death of their mother Jessie? I will see if they changed their names by deedpoll, as suggested. Also, another family member mentioned that Baron may have been an officer in the US army at some point.

I cant thank you all enough for your time and effort - it seems that both Baron and Edward were interesting men - perhaps thats the theatrical side of them coming out. Many many thanks Barrie Sylvester, son of Edna

What about checking electoral rolls for 26,Warwick Street Blackpool to see who was looking after Edna and Freda.
There dad gave that address in 1915 and Edna was there in 1924.

Re West 35th Street:

In 1901 the blocks just west of Fifth Avenue around 34th Street were gradually changing. The Astor mansions on Fifth Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets had been replaced by the hulking and exclusive Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and high-class commercial interests were increasingly converting other brownstone residences.

One-by-one the wide homes of West 35th Street were sold off and before 1910 the block would have no fewer than three high-end hotels.

Patchem has already posted 1911 re Woolf Davis.

Here he is in 1861 with sister Alice (Baron's mother).
No Gertrude, though, so maybe she's not a sister marrying at the same time as Alice.
Perhaps Casper is the uncle in New York? (45 35th Street is now the address of the Hotel Metro in Manhattan - so if that was his address in 1911, he was either a rich man with a huge house, or else a lodger.)

Re the Buttery/Barry 1911 census record -

it's signed by E Buttery, pro E Barry.

Edward Buttery would be the only male member of the household, so maybe that's why he signed it on Edward Barry's behalf (or Ethel's)

Oh, yes, Chris - you're right about Marcus and Jessie marrying in 1907 - I got mixed up in my reading of Diana's OP.

Mary

Mary Report 9 Sep 2014 11:49

Edward Buttery married as Albert Edward to Alice Edith Gaul.

Alice Edith Gaul parents George Gaul and Jane maybe nee Perkins married 14/11/1881
they also had Ethel Lavinia baptised 1888 Marylebone.

Ethel lavinia married 1908 Lambeth to Frank Albert Sheppard but I can't find them 1911.

Then there is a tree with Alfred B Coureau which states he was with Ethel Lavinia Gaul and had
Alfred B Coureau 13/2/1920 died 13/2/1976
There was also a Aline M Coureau born hammersmith 1915 nee Gaul!!
