I am wondering if Georgina and Mabel are one and the same? Might be worth buying that Mabel Clark and Benjamin marriage certificate to see who Mabel names as her father.

Not seeing a death yet for Charles Joseph Clark.

Ah Rootgatherer...... I think you might just be thinking along the same lines as me, I keep coming back to the 1917 marriage in Wolverhampton!!

Mabel married Mr Clark/e "ran off" with Ben then married him 1917.....but can I find any evidence.....no!! maybe when on 1911 census she says nine years married, she is telling the truth but to Mr Clark/e!!

I think that marriage certificate is called for.

I wonder if Mabel had lived with Ben for 9 years. My gut feeling is that Georgina changed her name to Mabel because she wasn't free to marry as she was still married to Charles Joseph Clark. Not seeing him and Georgina together on a census or even him on his own.

On the original it states Charles has been married 20 yrs and has no children,( it is then crossed out in red, presumably by the enumerator ).....which is a stroke of luck as it ties it in nicely with the marriage in 1890....

Was she actually Mabel Georgina born @ 1871 died June 1943 Cannock staffs??

Mabel Georgina Oldfield died 23/6/1943 of 31 Heath Gap Cannock staffs.
probate to Benjamin Oldfield a miner £164 10s 5d.

There is also a tree on Ancestry which says Benjamin at this address in 1929/1938.

Hi Misty, have had a quick luck through all the info the adress on b/c is market st bilston, the tree on ancestry if it is caz then we have been getting together on this as her father lodged with the oldfields and thought wilf was her dads cousin but could not find the connection and the oldfields are my relatives. she seems to think that mabel was one of william henrys brothers children but I think you may be right about her being name georgina because one wilfs children had the middle name georgina, and yes mary is right about the death, she probaly just called herself Mabel if she is georgina then she was william nd fannys daughter have i got that right?

If georgina and frances ann were sisters then that would make Caz's dad and wilfred oldfield cousin's or is it that easy?
benjamin oldfield was in Hampshire in 1901 and Georgina lived there that could be how they meet?

Georgina and Frances Ann were sisters, or at very least half sisters as we don't know who fathered them as their Mum's husband had died in 1869. So children of Georgina and Frances Ann would be cousins.


It was Mary's post about the death of Mabel that I was trying to work back from as I know Mary is usually pretty accurate. If we have solved this conundrum, I think much of the credit belongs to Mary although good teamwork has to be recognised.

Well done Misty for finding Charles and Georgina in the census. Now can we find a death for Charles or did Mabel marry bigamously?

still car'nt find a death for charles joseph clarke if he did die i think it must be between 1911 and 1916 because if mabel was going to commit bigamy she would have married Ben before 1917.

I've also searched Jackie, part of the problem being Clark/e is such a common name ( I know its my family name) and back then would she even have known of his death.....especially if he remained in Kent area, no children from the marriage to connect them...

Maybe she just thought 15yrs had passed and she felt "safe" it shall probably remain her secret....I do wonder if Ben knew though!!

Of no relevance at all but I wonder if this is his mothers death...

Susannah Sarah Pleasance 1843 married Joseph Charles Clarke.
They had son Charles Joseph /Joseph Charles 1864 Norton Suffolk.

On the census returns in Whickam his name changes from Joseph to Charles,so maybe he died in the name of Joseph Charles Clarke!!
