Sarah "Thank you for looking on SP for me hey jude. Really appreciate that and did not expect anyone to use their own credits for this. How can I repay you?" |

Interesting that hey jude could find no record of James Nairn's birth on Scotland's People. What would you good people suggest I do next? Is the only other way to find the record to go to Wigtiwnnshire in person and search the church records? |

Have had a play on SP and not really getting anywhere...have downloaded that 1851 census and the marriage of Alexander and Margaret - she was a McConnell - if you want these let me know and I will pm them. Not going to waste any more credits at the mo - no James Nairn (with parents Alexander and Margaret) born in Wigtownshire in the right time scale as far as I can see |

All of this doesn't explain why the lads were in Corwall or give us the name of the ship(s) they travelled on, but it is slowly building up a picture... |

Stewart Newall's birthplace, (according to the encyclopedia of NZ) was Durisdeer which is in Dumfries which isn't too far from Whithorn where James Nairn came from. It is also not far from Glasgow where some of the Whithorn Nairns migrated to looking for work. Stewart Newall's father is listed as still being in that area in the 1881 census. |

I have just tried to do a birth search for Stewart Newall and only got results for England and Wales. I 'm sure I have seen a link to Scottish records on Genes Reunited but can't find it now. Any help appreciated. Thanks |

I have just discovered that the Encyclopedia of NZ item about Newall has a note on sources which cite "diaries 1863-1901" |
