That is very interesting something else to get my teeth into I had found the school record but must admit due to being Thomas dis guarded it but now its a possible, due to her being adopted, she would need to put her actual father on her marriage banns, so another possible.

thank you.

I also wondered about this one for her in 1911 - maybe she didn't get on with adopted parents:

Annie Miller
Age in 1911:17
Estimated birth year:abt 1894
Relation to Head:Inmate
Gender:Female
Birth Place:London, England
Civil Parish:Croydon
County/Island:Surrey
Country:England
Street address:
St Mary's Roman Catholic Industrical School For Girls, Wellesley Road, Croydon
Marital Status:Single
Occupation:School Part Time Housework
Registration district:Croydon
Registration District Number:39
Sub-registration district:South Croydon
ED, institution, or vessel:41-42
Piece:3322

Or maybe she had been in bother?

Don't believe everything you read on marriage certificates - a lot of fathers were invented to cover illigitimacy - it wasn't checked back then.

:-) just pulled that one off re the Catholic school, I will definitely have to get my cousin to quiz his Dad.

Lol I have had some very big eye openers with some of my other relations, so nothing surprises me now, just love the intrigue and get such a buzz out of searching, unfortunately my husband does not have the same love of it all as me. but then it is his family I am looking at.

Choccy, that 1901 census you posted, if I am reading it right Thomas & Sarah Miller were both children of Lydia - and not married. Both have occupations as well. Maybe Thomas just registered Annie in school but wasn't her parent - it looks to me more like she was Lydia's adopted daughter (or rather Lydia took her in as no official adoptions back then..

So maybe when Lydia died she got shunted off to the industrial school? Only surmising, as I haven't looked for Lydia's death yet.

ADDED: Lydia born Ilford, along with husband Thomas, son Thomas and daughter Sarah all of the right age are on 1891 census in Poplar. Neither Thomas nor Sarah are married.

Enjoy your working weekend ;-) ;-)

Annie was removed from the school Choccy posted on 25/8/1902 - stated was going to "mixed school" whatever that is, though I can't find another school registration.

I can't see a death for Lydia Miller.

Don't hold out too much hope for her grandson, it's a long time ago and maybe she didn't talk much of her previous life. I knew little about my maternal grandmother's dark secrets until I started doing family history :-D

And I sympathise, my OH does nothing but complain when I'm on the internet - even though he's watching footie, motor racing or any other crap he can find on the TV!

This could be Lydia Miller death ??

Lydia Miller 90y -- Jun Q 1915 -- Poplar -- 1c 630 a bit older but if she died in the workhouse perhaps age not known

if that birth above is Annie then she may well be Sarah's daughter unless
Lydia had other daughters

I don't think Lydia had any other children apart from Thomas & Sarah unless some died between census.

If she was Sarah's daughter why wouldn't she have been recorded as grand-daughter?

That could be Lydia's death, but the age is 5 years out as she has been recorded as born 1830-32 depending on which census you look at. But like you say if died in workhouse they may not have know her real age.

Hi,
Sorry it has been a while some of my elderly family have kept me busy,
I have spoken to my husbands cousin and he in turn has spoken to his dad to see if we can get more information on his mum and grandmother.

Annie Kathleen was born 18th Aug 1895
her Mother we still do not have a name for but he remembers visiting her when he was about 13 living in London and she was blind, this is about 1945.
back to Annie her father was German and died approximately when Annie was 6 yrs old, her mother remarried a man called Thompson, Annie told her son stories of looking after her half sister and brothers we are led to believe by the name of jack or john, Thomas, Sarah and Mary, Annie left home at a early age due to a over friendly step father..
It would also seem that a cousin that registered her death found evidence she was German unfortunately i do not know what this is, but they are sure his name was Muller and she change it to Miller. I think Choccy school admissions could be correct along with the death, and flip 1911 entry of her working at a catholic school when she was 17 could also be correct due to the issues with her step father. any other confirmation of the half brothers and sisters would be greatly appreciated, i have looked but with the changing names its so hard.
Thank you. xx

they are the parents of Sarah Miller 1870/1871 Poplar she may have added
Lydia as a second Christian name

Lydia and Thomas Miller are both from Ilford Essex

Annie Kathleen Miller -- don't think she was a Muller -- more than likely the Illegitimate daughter of Sarah -- could be the birth I found earlier Kathleen Annie Miller but the only way to find out if it is Annie is to get a copy to see if the birthday date matches ?? but that's up to you.
