Could anyone help me please. Thomas Richard Rand was born Oct 1878 Gravesend Kent, his mother died in 1883 and father in 1888 . I found his sister Eliza in 1891 in Millers orphanage Bristol and his brother Arthur Frederick in a Dr Barnardos home Bethnal Green in 1891 but unable to find the whereabouts of Thomas. These 3 children were from a 2nd marriage of Richard John Rand who had 8 children by his 1st wife. Appreciate any help |

Hello AG ,pleased to hear from you again. You helped me find the family of one of my Dads crew, all killed in 1943 Holland. In contact with the Heath family in Australia and they are over the moon. Regarding Thomas Richard Rand, having looked at what has been sent I really do not know what to think, his christening was 10th Dec 1878 yet on the Canadian 1901 census ,his birthday down as 19th Nov 1878 so presume it is not him. Obviously the 3 children of the 2nd marriage were all sent to a home.in the 1891 Canadian census re the Dr Barnados boy states he was 15 but Thomas would only have been 12 but then dates are not always correct so it could be him, if his father died in 1888, mother in 1883, he could have been in Dr Barnados for a couple of years before sent to Canada hence why not on the 1891 UK census and his younger brother Arthur too young to be sent out to work. Found no death for him in the UK. |

Oh just realised Thomas was sent to Toronto and not Vancouver, that was the name of the ship |

Hello Alviegal. I feel the Thomas Rand sent to Toronto by Dr Barnadoes aboard the Vancouver in 1889 could be him and the marriage to Mabel Rose Boyd, although his father was Richard John Rand and not John Richard Rand but then names are sometimes down back to front. I wonder if he ever had further contact with his z2 siblings also put in homes or even with his 8 half siblings. I think it is dreadful what the staff of Dr Barnadoes did to the unfortunate children in their care by sending them abroad away from their kin. I know some made good but then others didn't. I was in an orphanage myself from 1947 until 1953 and was very fortunate I was not separated from my elder brother and we were not sent abroad. Just attended the yearly reunion with all from the orphanage and we are still like a family so feel very lucky to have this bond with them all. |

The christening of Thomas was 10th October 1878 Gravesend and not 10th December 1878 as stated so the November birthday is debatable, but then he may have thought his birthday as being November perhaps didn't have a birth cert. |
