Background info is often helpful when people are new to an enquiry.
Your unpleasantness is unnecessary, Sylvia, and unworthy of you.
it wasn't I who drew attention to this thread on the new one
I am not remotely upset, Margaret, so no need to concern yourself.
There are much more important things to worry about

Ricochet
for your information .....................
I suggested that Margaret started a new thread dealing specifically with Christopher in Canada.
It seemed a good solution to a new problem, and one that would attract Canadian researchers to the thread.
But thank you for pointing out the new thread ................ you rarely miss the opportunity, do you?

You should ALWAYS check the IMAGE of censuses
But, in any case, the transcription DOES record the GENDER
You also need to understand that relationships on censuses are to the HEAD of the household
1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription Castleside, Healeyfield, Lanchester, Durham, England
Print household transcription Household Members First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital condition Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place Edward Jeffrey Head Married Male 40 1851 Quarryman Caldbeck, Cumberland Image Transcription Jane Jeffrey Wife Married Female 47 1844 - Co Durham Hunstunworth Image Transcription Thomas F Jeffrey Son Single Male 15 1876 Labourer Co Durham Ramsham Image Transcription Elizabeth J Jeffrey Daughter Single Female 12 1879 Scholar Co Durham Castleside Image Transcription Levina Jeffrey Daughter Single Female 9 1882 Scholar Co Durham Castleside Image Transcription ? Smith Stepson Single Male 25 1866 Foreman Co Durham Castleside Image Transcription Alexander Smith Stepson Single Male 23 1868 Quay Labourer Co Durham Castleside Image Transcription Foster Jeffrey Son Single Male 4 1887 Scholar Co Durham Castleside Image Transcription
The enumerator obviously wasn't very good at spelling.....his version on the image looks more like Chrispoher...and the FMP transcriber chickened-out!

Hi Marie, I wonder whether you have nailed it and that this is an error on the 1891 census and that the name should say Christopher . As I said I have never heard of such a name had no idea whether male or female it never said . what you have here the date does fit with Christopher and he was born abt 1866 actually 1865 but what you have here says step son and this would not be correct . mother was Jane Foster Smith and she remarried an Edward Jeffrey so that must be another error as well. . but it does seem likely to be my missing Christopher all the same doesnt it?

Margaret, is "Chespohe" the transcription or what it actually says on the image for the name?
ADDED: This is part of the transcription
1891 England Census Name: Chespohe Smith Age: 25 Estimated birth year: abt 1866 Relation: Stepson << Mother's name: Jane Jeffrey Gender: Male Where born: Castleside, Durham, England Civil Parish: Healeyfield Ecclesiastical parish: St John County/Island: Durham Country: England
I wouldn't have thought a stepson was a she? It says Christopher on the image, so is this the Christopher that you couldn't find in 1891?

Hi Guys have a couple of questions for you and hope someone can tell me. I have on the 1891 census a name of Chespohe Smith 25 . I am trying to find out where she fits into the family. It is a name that is new to me never heard of anyone called that before. She would of been born abt 1869. I know she is not a sibling of Alexander Smith and Jane Foster . Also one of their sons either Christopher Smith of Thomas Smith/Jeffrey I have been told by family one of them went to Canada to live and one was an alcoholic and died in a work house . I can not find Christopher on the 1891 census so maybe it was him that went to Canada Any help trying to say which one went to Canada would be appreciated and who this Chespohe is. Thanks.

sorry guys for not getting back to you sooner but have been off line and trying to find out more from my friend who owns this SMITH family. I would like to thank you all for the info you have posted and for the confusion of wandering off on another generation when I should of posted under the original post. so please accept my apology for doing so. The latest news on this family is that Alexander born 1867 left England before the 1911 census have not found what year and went to New Zealand and worked in the Huntley coal mines and saved enough money to bring Minnie and the daughters to NZ to live . They had 5 daughters what you have said on here and one more being a Lena Smith and when they all settled Alexander and Minnie had a son which no one could find as he was born in NZ he was Arthur Smith b 19. 11.1916 . Alexander died 24/11/1943 and Minnie 4/12/1954 and buried in the HillsboroughCemetery Auckland NZ I have been told the reason they came to nZ was Minnie did not get on with her step father whom I believe to be this Michael Anderson mention on the site by Sylvia .. so apart from finding when Minnie and the daughters went to NZ and also Alexander I seem to have most of it all covered now. Thanks once again for everyones help. Appreciated as always. :-) Margaret
