I am back on the Connolly trail and wondering if any kind person could help me to trace my Irish Great, Great Grandfather, Michael Connolly. (Conolly, Connelly, Conley?). He was born in Cork about 1812. . My Great grand father, Peter Charles Conolly born in Eire in 1838, married in Sheffield in 1861 to Ann Sweeney. A witness was Frances Conolly which is a common name in the family. I do have a Michael Conolly who died in Liverpool in 1840/1. All I know is that he was a Farm labourer. It is a "Puzzlement" bessie bennett

I am still trying to discover what my Grand father was in goal for. He did have a lame leg and a nasty temper so it could have been a fight. As their second daughter was born on 1902 he could not have been in prison for long. Any more info on the subject please.? All the names of the children in the 1911 census are correct and he did have a sister who married a Frederick Savage. He died very young along with their baby, frederick, so obviously my crafty Grand father used the name instead of Conley. Bessie

Hi again Bessie I can't find a Military Service Record for him but it could be because so many were destroyed in WW11. No idea about money being raised to buy him a cart we may need to wait for the 1921 census to find out if that is true!
|
I did send the names of my Mother's (Elizabeth Conley), siblings. I hope it helped you in your research? Thanks for the help so far.

Here I am again. I was told that my Grand father, Terrance Joseph Conley (connolly), was in the Army in the 1914 war. I was told that he had a bad leg from an injury and money was raised to buy him a cart to sell veg: from.. However, I have found out so many False stories I am double checking. Can you help me with this one please. Bessie

Hi, Just to confirm that I do appreciate your help. Kathleen, Winifred, Agnes, Gladys and a boy, Terrance Joseph, died in childhood. There was a mention of twins but I only found such in the Peter Connolly family. Joseph was a very bad tempered man so maybe he was in a fight hence the Goal? Bessie

There were 12 more children after Phyllis Maude but only 6 girls survived. I have received info that they may have used the name Savage? Could be correct because the Savage childrens' names match the Conley names I have. Joseph Conley had a sister, Mary Ann, who married a Frederick Savage. The family lived in Chorlton, Manchester. during the early 20th century. Maud, Phyllis, Elizabeth (Elsie my mum), Margaret (Madge), Frances and Lilian were the surviving children. Kathleen, Winifred, Agnes, Terrance Joseph were some of the deceased children. Thanks for your interest and help. Bessie ;-

I've been looking in the newspapers and crime & punishment on FindMyPast to see if there was anything about Joseph but can't see anything obvious.
What on earth was there to report on this thread? It seems the GR team must have started work early this morning as they seem to be showing OK.

Although 1901 says Edward's age is 38, I think that's probably a mistrnscription of 33 by the enumerator

From Astra's baptism record, it seems her mum's hubby (Edward) was not Bessie's dad (I'm discounting hypotheses involving Victorian sperm banks). Her mum was Emma Johnson m.s. Bennett - she was a char in 1881, so I imagine there was some stuff up with her occup of Cleanor in the record.

Lewis (1848) says: CARNFORTH, a township, in the parish of Warton, union of Lancaster... http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445 I don't know exactly what Warton sub-RD covered. I do know it included the 2 1850 Lancs parishes (Silverdale & Yealand) to the N of Warton parish. The E half of Warton's N bounday was with Burton in Kendal, which was adjacent to, and SE of, Kendal parish - Buron lay in the Kirkby-Lonsdale subdistrict of Kendal RD.

Thanks Mike. All of the births are correctly registered as Conley. It is just the 1911 census which can't be put down to transcription error because it is signed as Savage.
|
The births after 1911 are not recorded as Savage. Name change appears to be just for the census

Ah Terence! Of course. Thanks so very much for that Reggie. All of this is just a theory at the moment until Bessie comes back and confirms the names of the children but it is looking more and more plausible.
|
'Joseph' 1911 would be Terence Joseph whose birth and death I posted earlier
Splendid work, Astra
|
So I was wondering if there was a reason for the possible name change and I came across this! No idea what he did but he is in HM Prison Lancaster in 1901. This could be why Bessie is alone with her daughter and claiming to be a widow.
